More proof that Jeep is the leader in 4x4 overland vehicles

I've been to Haiti, Bosnia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Afghanistan, Iraq, iseral, turkey, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Western Europe, Somalia, South Korea, Japan, the Philippines and parts of South America and I don't remember ever seeing a single jeep product. Sorry guys, jeeps are not in any over seas markets in any great numbers.

I think Jeep for safety sake have low payload to avoid problems in tests like this Grand cheroke that failed the famous moose test, se the movies

But Jeep listened and 2014 is great:)
http://teknikensvarld.se/this-is-how-the-new-jeep-grand-cherokee-2014-handles-the-moose-test-117095/

Toyota 4runner looks great but what I can se it is not for sale in Europe or in Australia http://www.toyota.com.au/home or in South Africa http://www.toyota.co.za/. Is 4runner only for America?
And the Toyota Fj cruiser aint for sale in Europe

I'm glad you brought up those videos - I think that's THE BIGGEST reason why North American vehicles have lower payload and tow ratings than EU versions - Safety and Lawyers. The next reason is comfort, which requires softer springs.

Let's be honest with ourselves, does anyone really think a LC70, Defender, or even Unimog loaded to its max GVW can pass a moose test? Should we expect them to? What about a cement mixer truck or tractor trailer?

I doubt even the frame is the limiting factor. There's no industry standard when it comes to frame strength. I'm willing to bet a late-70's "3/4 ton" pickup with C-channel frame is weaker than the modern fully boxed and hydroformed "1/2 ton".

Remember, in the commercial trucking world, your GVW is almost always your GAWRs combined. It's always assumed that your springs are stiff enough to handle the rated axle load. I have never seen "payload" or "tow rating" in a standard Kenworth or Peterbilt spec sheet. Only steer and rear tandem axle load ratings.

Can I rephrase a little tid bit in your post please? the reason we have lower payloads and tow ratings, LAWYERS!.......Since you live in sue happy America, (and its getting bad here too now, There is a class action lawsuit against the local government here regarding Moose/vehicle accidents which is just off the charts stupid), we have to suffer....

The dumb is strong in this thread.

Here in Australia Jeeps are making some in roads into vehicle sales with the JKs, especially the JKUs, very popular as daily driven vehicles for the family. Sells the idea of adventure without actually going offroad more than a weekend plaything.

The kings of the long distant travelling are still the Cruisers and Patrols.

The dumb is strong in that last post because this side of the world, there are crusiers and QX(patrols) and soccer moms drive them, and the JEEP is used for the real world off roading....

Really? Pointing out that Jeeps are not the choice of over landing vehicle in a country you don't live in is dumb? And I never made the claim they were the be all and end all like this thread has strived to do. You need to understand the US isn't the centre of the world

I think my first observation still holds true

Ha ha....

I don't live in the United states. And again, I feel that my observation is true. Crusiers and patrols here are soccer mom rigs. Yes you can make an observation about your part of the world, but to come in and say "the dumb is strong in this thread" makes you look like an ************.

Yes I realise you live in Canada but the OP and the reason for this thread was US based reasoning.

Your observation maybe true from your perspective but when you are outside if North America it doesn't hold up to the facts

but yours don't over here....see. from everything thats available HERE, its the best. elsewhere, I think the defender/Rovers are the gear!

There is no reason to come into this thread and making the comment you did. thats all I am saying....

I like how Omar post links and information on this thread... That is what I was hoping to read (looking to buy a newer off-road vehicle). This thread has become just arguing between members. I think the patrols in reference here are GU Y61's or older. Newer patrols are a completely different vehicle class. This thread title needs to be changed to location specific, at least that way many of these arguments wouldn't have occurred. To say Jeep Wrangler as the leader in the overlanding world is very different from best. I think Wranglers are absolutely killer, easy to modify and very customizable with fantastic 4x4 features to boot! But they are too new in popularity to be the leader. The term 'best' is just an opinion (held by some). That opinion should be taken for what it is... Someone's 2 cents. When somebody else gives their's, listen to it as you wanted them to listen to yours.
'
But if given the choice, id take a y61 patrol or a straight axle 80 series land cruiser over a wrangler on an expedition/adventure.

In all seriousness, I like having a bit of fun, but, as long as your out there, thats all the really matters. who gives a crap what you drive, as long as you do.

Point taken. I should have worded the thread differently. Toyota and Land Rover have dominated the overland market for many years. I should have worded the thread Jeep is making in-roads and in my opinion should be the leader. Why? In my opinion dollar for dollar the Jeep is less expensive. Also the ability in the box is amazing. Then after market parts once you take it out of the box is unbelievable.

Exactly! My ifs rocking, unibody thumping, strut stomping pathfinder can go everywhere I have needed... Just with less grace than you guys with you renowned 4x4's.

I agree with everything you just wrote. My only pause to get one would be SOOO many people here have upgraded ones but they NEVER see dirt. I like to be a little different thats why I went pathfinder not xterra. Hard to beat a accessory catalog 1000 pages long though...
