Has anyone mentioned this surplus S&S LMTV on Government Liquidation?

1995 Stewart & Stevens Services M1078 LMTV Cargo Truck, 4X4, 2 1/2 ton capacity, with locking inter-axle differential. Powered by a Caterpillar 3116 6-cylinder diesel engine driving through an automatic transmission. Serial number AT2182BAGD. Odometer reads 5543 miles. This vehicle starts with a jump/unable to start. Removal days are Tuesday thru Friday 7-5pm with 24 hour notice.

Anyone interested should probably do their research on these. I know this forum has seen some discussion on the maintenance costs. Also consider the posts of Joaquin Suave, who has taken on a LMTV prototype as a project, and is having considerable trouble getting it going, despite his extensive experience and ability.

Up to now, other than this one, I haven't included any domestic military vehicles. There are so many listings for old 6x6 and 4x4 surplus trucks out there that I didn't think I could do them any justice. I know less about them than the commercial trucks and I know essentially zero about the big commercial trucks.

My veteran friends (with the exception of the USAF guys), would all loudly proclaim that it must be unused except to drive to the golf course since it's an ex-Air Force truck. :)

All kidding aside, it looks like an extremely capable vehicle.

However, along with you, I would have to advise interested parties to do a ton of research before jumping into something like this.

I have no idea where you'd get parts, manuals, etc.

Also, it's important to keep in mind that a 2.5 ton military truck is exactly that: 5,000 lbs of payload capacity.

But, I will keep your generous offer of free labor in mind. ;)

No worries!

I have no big agenda. Just wanted to curate a snapshot of what was out there in 4x4 / 6x6 / etc. high capacity chassis in the U.S. market.

I've spent countless hours around campfires complaining about how all the cool big overlanding trucks are available only in other markets, so I thought I'd stop complaining and try to shine a little light on things here.

If anyone can contribute anything, please do.

As I've mentioned, other than driving some of these trucks when I was (much) younger, I have zero experience with them.

Consequently, it would be great if people who have mechanical, ownership or operational experience with these brands, chassis, drivetrains, etc. could add real-world anecdotes, warnings, praise, endorsements, etc.

If I can get some free time again, I hope to add some cost estimates to ship, import and ICI-process a recent year Euro 3 truck.

I should also add that any of the trucks that have a payload of some kind, such as a digger, boom, tank, spreader, etc., can probably be purchased for less by deleting the payload.

I called and got a "cab and chassis only" price on a few of the trucks in this thread, so you may be able to get some idea of how much you could save by letting the dealer keep whatever is currently mounted on the truck.

There are many forums, web sites, etc. dedicated to these military trucks, so experience, advice and counsel is probably out there.

There are also parts suppliers, at least for the more popular variants.

Having said all that, these are military vehicles, so they are short on comfort, slow, loud and built like, well, tanks.

Beyond that, I am not qualified to comment on any of these trucks. Hopefully we'll get some people with direct experience to comment or contribute.



There are TONS of these trucks out there. I am only posting a few just to give some food for thought, etc.

Please don't blame me for your time lost from doing productive things.

Here are some additional ways Lynn can be responsible for our lost productivity. :)

Four 2.5 ton payload military vehicles in the FMTV program that overlanders may be interested in include:

  • M1078 2.5 ton Cargo Truck, (LMTV) (basic cargo truck with a rear flatbed cargo deck)
  • M1079 2.5 ton Van (box version - may be a good starting point for a camper box)
  • M1080 2.5 ton Chassis (bare chassis)
  • M1081 2.5 ton Cargo Truck LVAD LAPES/AD (this is the C130 air chute deployable version of the 1078)


These would be good model numbers to search for.

These four variants are part of the Light Medium Tactical Vehicle (LMTV) group, with 2.5-ton / 5,000 lb / 2273 kg payload capacity.

I don't know anything about these trucks, so I can't provide any perspective.
