Yep. Got one about 5 minutes down the road. Love that place!

Nice! There was one that I went to a lot in Ft. Worth quite often but it was about a 20 minute drive. I moved to Missouri last year and they decided to open one up in my hometown there about a month after I left. Go figure!! The food is the thing I miss most about Texas. I actually had a dream about Whataburger a few weeks back! lol.

Still resting in my yard waiting for me to have time to replace the front main seal. I am currently looking at just replacing the engine, since this one has 278,500 miles on it. I son't like prolonging the inevitable rather than fixing things.

Any suggestions for a rebuilt, used, or crate motor for the 80, gents?

I'll probably be replacing the tranny in the near future as well. Eventually I'll have a new truck! :)

Yeah, lets replace the engine because a seal is bad. :sombrero:

Hey Mike, I call dibs on the Cruiser's coil springs whenever we lift the truck. I've... got... an.... idea....

If you want, Mike, we can play trucks next weekend. I need to change the front main on the 4runner. Since we usually only work on your truck, we'll start on mine first.:)

Are you burning a lot of oil? low compression? Low end knock? If not, leave it be. One of the guys over on mud (might be the liked thread, I can't see it at work) tore his down with 225k and he still had crosshatch marks on the cylinder walls. Another guy had 300k on his truck and when he took it in to toyota for a tune up, it tested to within 5% of factory specs. That truck has 350k plus now.

1fz rebuild kits are very spendy. Short blocks from toyota are VERY spendy (3k) Your best bet would be a used engine. Also, having just done the tranny on mine, do it all in one shot. It will save you a lot of time and aggravation.

If you insist on replacing the engine, get your "new" one first, replace the HG and have your head ported, polished, etc, while it is on the bench.

I'd say do it when you have a weekend free. The front is not terrible, you just need a way to loosen and retorque the crankshaft bolt I believe. I've had a 94 for about three years now and the rear main or rear arch (oil pan, I think?) has been leaking pretty steady. Doesnt burn anything like yours though, maybe a quart every thousand miles. I wish I had a leaking front instead of rear though. I'd tear it down over the weekend and finally fix my leak....

I also like your idea of an "under the radar" rig. Due to my lack of desire to spend $$$, I've stayed with a mild OME 850/863 lift, BFG 285's and lockers for a couple years. I dont crawl on rocks, so this setup keeps me light (is that an oxymoron with an 80?) and capable of getting pretty much anywhere I want. I would love an aux fuel tank though and maybe some storage drawers for the back.

Best of luck with the truck whichever way you decide to go with the leak.

I will test the engine thoroughly and decide whether to replace it or not. This is likely to be the truck that The_Mrs. and I take around the world, and I will not take a problem that is waiting to happen.

I'll replace the seal just so I can get it driving again, but if it tests out to be less thatn satisfactory, it will be replaced before spring 2013. The tranny is already grumpy sometimes, so it will be replaced regardless.

I've raised my hand, if funds and time allow.

I still haven't heard the general idea with this trip though...

Mikey?

Early planning stages. Scheduled for departure spring 2013. I just hope we are able to make it happen. Most folks who plan these trips have life happen to them and end up not able to go.

I'll fill you in this weekend while we are playing trucks. I didn't want to rain on Jeremy and Ian's trips while I was over there.
