So my oil light came on this morning on my way to work.

Put in a quart just to get me to work and I'm taking it over for an oil change at lunch.

The_Mrs. has been driving it lately, and I have not been keeping up with it since the last oil change. I suspect that there was no oil plug gasket put on during the last change, and that it has been leaking.

I hope that it was just leaking and not burning. The exhaust doesn't smell funny, and no O2 codes.

I'll have to check it out when I have a few minutes of free time!

On another note, I've been considering going with a stealth build with this truck. Descretely capable, disguised as a mall cruiser... I may even rename the build thread.

Right now I'm thinking low profile off road lights behind the grill (idea inspired by jbrandon's very tidy Power Wagon), OME extended height coils, 315/75/R16s, and eventually get my axles rebuilt with longfeilds and 4.88 gears. I may try a setup similar to the Deckplate mod for 4Runners for a snorkeling system to the inside of the cab... have the normal mode draw from an open slot under the hood, and the snorkel mode draw from behind the dash on the passenger side. I'll use the "snorkel" with the windows down, 'cuz it will be loud and will be sucking air directly from inside the cabin. I need some time to draw it out and examine whether this solution is feasable. Like I said, I would like to keep this build stealthy, and adding a traditional snorkel would just ruin that theme right off the bat.

I will hide the winch behind the license plate, which will be easily removable (thinking wing nuts, no folding thingy). There is a nice compartment in the rear quarter panel that I intend to make full use of for the air compressor.

I could use several boxes or bags for gear, medical supplies, food, ground tent, and other stuff. I could keep them packed in the garage for an easy load and go, or I could just hook up to the trailer.

Those Swiss Home in a Box things caught my eye this morning. Very cool, and I would get them for the cruiser if I could afford them (like $9k with the options I want).

Given the recent issues, I may have to hold off on the build for a while. A new engine, transmission, and rebuilt axles are more important than fun stuff.

We shall see. See my sig line! :)

I don't know that much about FZJ80's (other than headgasket problems), but with FJ80's about the only things likely to take a dump are things that you should assume are going to need to be fixed, serviced, or replaced anyway. Examples of what I'm talking about are: AC compressor, starter, radiator, alternator, birfs, bearings, brakes, u-joints, etc.

I haven't heard of a lot of Land Cruiser engines having catastrophic problems. Not sure about transmissions, but even if that needs a rebuild, it's not the end of the world.

Add transfer case solonoids, and locker solonoids, to that as well, sir. Very common if the truck was used as a soccer-mom/kid transport.

As for the tranny, not the end of the world, but for someone like me who makes a descent living, but who does not have $4000.00 laying around for a new/rebuilt transmission, it is a bit of a hurdle...

That being said, I may still consider an fj80 (or maybe an early fzj80) to replace my Cherokee as my girls grow. I have had nothing but reliability from my Jeep, so I'm reading owner threads pretty carefully! thanks for posting all your experiences, Mr. Leary. :)

I'm really diggin the stealth build idea and cant wait to see how you work through each step.

This is the route I would like to take with my 4R. I love the sleeper look but still have a very capable ride.

:smilies27 Looks like the front main seal is almost gone... whole bottom of the truck is coated in oil, from the front of the engine back...

This sucks. I have no time to fix this and my steering rack still hasn't been done on the 4Runner.

Wishing I hadn't sold all the bikes right now...

Gonna limp it home this evening, stopping frequently to check / add oil. Hopefully I can get it home and park it until I have time to put a new seal in it (PITA).

What is wrong with your tranny?

I just put a used tranny in mine.......175k hard miles on the original and got a low mileage (91k) one from a yard for 200 bucks....

What you whining about you weiner... I've put about 20k on a gushing front main!

Going quite a bit faster than yours... more like a quart every 30 miles... maybe I'm exagerating, but its a lot, and I've had to fill it up twice already today...

OK.

It just sounded like you were planning on replacing the tranny.....

Moving on...

I hope not. The tranny is shifting smoothly now, but goes into gear a little hard when cold.

Auto trannys are kinda unpredictable though, here one day and gone the next!

So I got the cruiser home last night. It still held oil pressure, although lower than normal. Total 4 quarts of oil added yesterday, starting when my oil light came on at 6AM. So maybe not as bad as I had thought... but the whole undercarrieage of the truck is now coated with "auto-undercoating."

The cruiser is parked until I have time to mess with it... probably about a month or so... gotta finish this brutal semester...
