My Backcountry Camper Trailer Build

Rob,

Not a very good picture but the first thing that bottoms on my KK trailer is the bolt that attaches my Treg hitch to my truck. I have kissed it several times but it's never been a serious problem.

My hitch is about a 2" vertical offset above the trailer hitch point.

Do you know what the frame height of the trailer is? Mine is about 18"? Your trailer seems pretty similar in profile to mine. It's not that my trailer is so low, it's that my new bumper is so high.

Ok, it's update time!

I've spent a bit of time on the trailer the last week. I got the kitchen slide installed.

The intent is to have the stove and a cooler permanently mounted to the slide, probably with a nice veneered plywood box around them or something like that. Really the goals is to have some kind of a heat shield between the stove and cooler, and also extra insulation all the way around the cooler. Also possibly a lid on top of the cooler so that it can be latched and at least be racoon proof.

For the cooler looks like we'll be going with a Waeco/Mobicool A40 tri-mode powered cooler. One of the absorbtion cycle devices that can run on propane. They're affordable, the propane option is nice, and they do work better than the cheezy 12V coolers. It's also really the only thing that fits beside the stove on the slide platform.

The only problem with the slide as I have it now, is that the door must be opened 180° to get the slide out. That is because of the way the door is hinged. It is a significant problem if a motorcycle is on the tongue. My only options are to change the hinges so the door swings more out of the way. Or, to narrow the platform a bit. I'll probably attempt option 1 at some point.

I also got the latching door installed on the kid's area, but don't have a good photo yet.

Ah. :)

Coleman Hot Water On Demand. Hook it up to propane and it heats water for dishes instantly. It's more fuel efficient that heating water on the stove even. It's a little bulky, but oh so nice and convenient, and I've got the room.

Rob, could you put a ply packing strip between the front wall and the kitchen slide? This would make the kitchen a little narrower to clear the depth of the door frame when open 90deg. You'd only lose about one inch on the kitchen depth.

Indiedog, that's pretty much my option 2. But I think it'd need to lose 2 inches to get it done. It's not the end of the world, but I'll see if I can do new hinges first. It's the slightly more complicated, but slightly better option, I think. But yeah, right now the brackets holding the slides are 2"x1/8" strip bolted to the frame, and I'd just need to change them to 2x2 tube to move that slide 2".

Rob, my brain doesn't retain too much information these days!! :Wow1:

Some hinges with L shaped plates would work but don't know how available they are. Or bending some long throw hinges maybe. Otherwise some welding on your nice finished work may be necessary.

Just an update on the trailer. I picked up a Mobicool A40 absorbtion cooler for use on the trailer. It fits perfectly beside the stove on the slide. I plan to build some sort of box around both of these units. I think. I need a heat shield between the two at the least, for obvious reasons. But I figure might as well build a box around the cooler to increase it's insulation. It would have to be open on the back to allow the heat to escape the absorbtion heat exchanger.

I also managed to get the RV water pump working so that I don't have to use the pump that came with the Coleman heater, nor do I have to lug around the 5 gallon water jug. I used the internal 19Gal tank. I've had a bit of trouble finding a relay to switch the pump on using the 6V supply from the heater. I'm using a small PCB relay rated at 3Amps, but that is just temporary. I just found a 6V 30A automotive relay from Tyco and will purchase one plus a spare.

We used the trailer on the weekend and it's coming along nicely. My son REALLY wants to be able to sleep in his space. It was hard to disuade him. So any fears that he won't want to are disappearing. Hopefully his room can be finished soon enough. Need to get a smoke detector and an LED night light in there at the least. Probably a wireless door chime as well. It's got a dead bolt on the inside that he already knows how to use. He wanted to read a book in there, so we let him, and I just thought "I better warn him not to touch the deadbolt, I didn't bring the keys" Turn around, and he's already locked it. Uh oh. But, he unlocked it with no problem.

My wife was impressed, because we returned from the beach at noon, and managed to cook lunch and eat it, feed a baby, and keep the 4 year old happy, wash the dishes, and break camp in 1:45. Pretty good, and it'll just get better as the trailer gets more complete.

Yeah, I took a couple. I'll post 'em, but it's obviously still a work in progress. I also have my cabinets almost finished, just have to varnish them and cut the doors. They came out pretty well.

Nice Rob... Glad it's working out so well. Some pictures of camp all setup?

Here's from our last trip. My truck is still broken, so we're using the minivan and just going to a campground. It tows the trailer no problem, with the canoe on top too. But mileage took a massive hit. The trailer seems much harder on the van than it is on the truck.

The kitchen side is coming along, but I'm really looking forward to getting the cabinets installed.

Everything we took for camping fit inside the trailer, even the paddles, life jackets and the Pack'n'Play. There was basically nothing in the van, just a few things we wanted at hand, toys and snacks for the kids.
