My first "net" tonight with the 2 meter

I listened in on my first on air net tonight. Was pretty cool actually. I listened in on Catalina Amatuer Radio Club's Swapmeet NET. It's broadcast off of their repeater on Catalina Island. Which is 25 miles off the CA coast and at least 60 miles from where i was! Came in clear as a bell. They had people keying up from all over SoCal and even some dude from Santa Barbara (that's about 120 miles from me!, but he was hitting the repeater first before i heard it). Must of been a good 20-30 people on that thing. I couldn't introduce myself cause i don't have my callsign yet. They had people selling all sorts of radios and antennas on it. It was pretty neat.

Earlier in the evening i picked up some dudes talking via airplane that was interesting too. It was weird to hear the guy say "yeah i gotta run, they just told me i can land now" lol He was flying back from Mexico.

Just thought i'd share.

Cool... I am so jealous. I just need time to take the test!

I have gotten ground interference by a group using HAM's it was costly as I missed my ATC clearance to land, and ATC assumed I went lost coms due to the radio block. Please do all the pilots out there a favor and if you hear them they can probably hear you, and keep in mind that we can not do anything unless told to by ATC when we are up there, and if you block ATC it could jepordize the safety of the flight, especially in bad weather.

Being that there is over 20 mhz of separation from the air band and 2m ham band and being that aircraft communications is AM and ham radio is mainly FM on VHFHow do you know it was ham interference?

If your hearing aircraft on the ham bands then your most likley hearing hams in a aircraft or you have a radio that has receive only ham bands.

While its always possible for a radio to interfere with another, having a "group" interfere would be rare. Also keep in mind interference is a two sided issue, Just because your hearing me on your radio doesnt mean its my transmitter causing the problem, It could be your receiver!.

Yeah it was 147.090, which is a 2 meter repeater freq.
