My FZJ80 Overland Build

Just as an FYI, i went with a custom 2.5 inch exhaust, one high flow spun magna flow cat and a dynomax muffler. Sounds great, but i was getting a CEL. No matter what i did. the simulator fixed that.

I really like how it sounds and how it performs. with the supercharger it really is noticeable.

as a data point, i have a good friend who has a 3 inch custom exhaust and i personally think it's too loud. I don't notice any performance gain with his over mine.

Could you post a link to the simulator you have? I'm having issues

My experience on aftermarket exhaust seems to be the luck of the draw.
My old 96 SC 80 had a peanut cat, Magnaflow muffler, a resonator, and full 3" never a code.
My 96 80 now uses a Magnaflow cat, Walker muffler with OEM sized piping also no codes. I didnt need to replace the front O2 sensor after 3 years 2 with the new exhaust but I not sure if that was exhaust related.
On my present set up O2 sensors stayed as close to factory as possible but not the case with my older 80.
Others can put anything on in any combination and throw codes.
What ever you do get the exhaust up and out of the way. Mr T did a crappy job with the factory exhaust IMO

Nice job on the paint and install on the rails they blend nicely with your 40th. FWIW most of my rail contact (except once) has been from the center back.

Looking back through your thread. You're truck looks so great! Not sure how it is up close, but makes me want to spend some time taking care of my cosmetic issues. Keep up the good work! :D

Its not to bad up close, there are some small chips in the paint along the bottom of the doors, seems to be from driving without front mud flaps.(Still need to get those!) And some of the wood trim around the gear shift is peeling up, but other then that and the hole I put in it for the snorkel it's pretty clean, but not so much that you can't take it were it was meant to go.:sombrero:

Few Things to Catch Up On

First up...

This goes with out saying...

Also got my SOR TuffDuck slip covers on. The fit and finish is very nice, the leather was just killing me in the summer time, plus it will be nice to limit wear on them.

Its nice to have map pockets again!

I absolutely love your 80. It's awesome.

When you pulled the roof rails, did you find any rust underneath? And how did you fill the nutserts? Looks like you put something into them, instead of removing them and welding up the holes, right? Any close-ups of your work there?

All-Terrain,

Sorry for the late reply, no rust under the rails on mine. I just used a ss screw with rubber grommet and some silicon to fill in the holes. Seems to be holding up ok so far. Went though and couldn't find any close ups but I could take some if you would like.

Dude, your truck is awesome.

Yeah, I'd like to see some photos of the roof holes, thanks.

Also - how good/bad is your upholstery underneath the SOR seat covers? I want to get some of the covers, but wondering if I should pony up for new leather instead - my seats aren't terrible, but there is a little cracking, just enough to barely be able to see the foam in one or two places. So if I'm sitting on seat covers, I'm thinking I may feel the cracks in the leather anyway, and that they will just get worse over time even though they aren't exposed to the sun/UV.

Had to bite the bullet and get the exhaust done. The cats had broken up and made a terrible rattle, also some of the mounts had broke were one of the POs had welded in a new muffler at some point, so it was well over due. After talking with the local exhaust shop and some reading on Mud I decided to convert to one larger OBDII cat instead of replace both with factory units. This was for two reasons; cost (obviously one is cheaper then two), and ground clearance. Their is also an argument to be made for a performance gain but that is just a side effect to my reasons. The new cat was clocked 90* and is now level with the frame. It is nice to look at the side of the truck and not see the cats hanging down! We did reused some of the factory tubing and mounts to ensure the 02 sensors stayed in the same place, this seems to have worked because the check engine light has not come on. This can happen if you convert to one cat and move around the 02s.( At least that is the theory I subscribed to after some research) The rest from the cat back was redone with new tubing and a new performance"ish" muffler. This was his call and the new tone is growing on me. It's no Flowmaster but it is just a bit louder under load, but with out a drone at cruising speed.

The end result is a bit more throaty tone and a decent gain in ground clearance.:sombrero:

Were did the cats go...

Tucked up nice and safe now

Tail pipe is up higher then factory but the extra bracket for the bumper limits it from being tucked up all the way. Still much better.

Nice clean set-up do you have a part # for the CAT it looks very clean!
