My Journey

Foy.....I'm guessing that you probably know.....

Ace.....thanks.....Tanner has become everything that I could have possibly hoped for. He's had big paws to fill.....both Montana & Yukon were extraordinary dogs and both were my best friends. I often think of getting another Golden Retriever or a Yellow Lab but I'm content with my life so I'm thinking that will not happen.....but who knows what tomorrow will bring.....

PNWY.....thanks.....I remember once Dougnuts posted that he shows this blog to his two sons and they enjoyed it quite a bit. I can't help but to recall that and I think to post more.....

Now north of Leadore, Idaho, we drove through the valley filled with small creeks.....it truly is amazing the number of small creeks that fill this valley.....

20200523_104550_copy_1600x366.jpg

Each creek eventually flows into the Lemhi River which parallels Highway 28 and flows north for miles and miles.....

20200523_104646_copy_1600x778.jpg

We stopped often along this route.....

20200523_150732_copy_1600x778.jpg

20200523_104657_copy_1600x778.jpg

The highway is lined with informative sign posts.....

20200523_112940_copy_1600x778.jpg

20200523_104611_copy_1600x778.jpg

And the scenery was superb.....

20200523_112928_copy_1600x778.jpg

20200523_104733_copy_1600x3291.jpg

We passed through Salmon, Idaho, connected with Highway 93, continued north, climbed the steep mountain highway as snow began to fall, and at the mountains highpoint we left Idaho behind.....

20200523_153148_copy_1600x778.jpg

That night was our first night camped in Montana.....it had taken us about a month to get here.....and it felt good that night sleeping in the forest way up high in the mountains of the state I call home.....

Ahhhh, Welcome Home, Jerry and Tanner, Welcome Home.

We'll be right out there ourselves----in a couple of months or so! Go ahead and get rid of the last of the snow in the high passes in the Pioneer Mountains, won't you please?

Jerry,,,, Ok, your in my old stomping grounds,,,,, ie... I've still got some Property at Painted Rocks Lake, and some distant relatives in Darby......

Foy.....thanks.....it's still snowing here. A couple of days ago I was west of Butte, Montana and a powerful storm passed through and dumped a ton of snow. Butte got 7" and I was told that the higher elevations got over a foot.....and of course it's been cold.....

BigDawwg.....it's always good to return home.....now I'm hoping to find or build an actual home.....

Our first Montana hike of 2020 would be on the Nee-Me-Poo Trail.....we slept at the trailhead and got an early start.....

20200523_160944_copy_1200x2469.jpg

The remains of the ancient pines.....they were certainly beautiful.....

20200523_162501_copy_1200x5645.jpg

And they have an interesting story to be told (as shown on the sign that I posted). As we climbed the mountain that divides Idaho and Montana, we would encounter quite a few mule deer on the hike but no signs of bear.....I can't stress enough how much we loved being home.....

The Montana mountains.....well, they speak to me.....

20200524_113823_copy_1200x583.jpg

20200524_113830_copy_1200x583.jpg

Continuing north on Highway 93 we passed through numerous small Montana towns and along this stretch of highway there are quite a few log cabin builders.....

I stopped at every log home builders construction site as we continued our push north.....

By far this log cabin builder was my favorite.....

20200524_133206_copy_1200x583.jpg

This ready to go log cabin caught my attention.....but I still needed some land.....

20200524_134802_copy_1200x583.jpg

20200524_133345_copy_1200x583.jpg

This small cabin (a bit too small for me) is everything that I would want in a cabin. The rough cut square logs.....they appeal to me.....

We continued north.....

As young marrieds in our mid-twenties, my wife and I traveled that stretch of US 93 south of Missoula on "window shopping" side trips several times. Just this year, in cleaning out a closet of old books and publications, we came across a file we'd kept containing several of the manufacturers' brochures. Great memories then and today, but we never bought a log home!

Foy.....as I approach one thousand days on the road, my dreams of travel have begun to fade and the thought of that life in a log cabin has replaced that other dream.....not forever I'm sure, but it's only the log cabin that I dream of today.....

Arjan.....you know me.....I enjoy sharing the adventures.....

We stayed that night in a parking lot owned by Bretz RV in downtown Missoula, Montana. I wanted to mention this dealership by name simply because I think the owner is an admirable man, as well as a great businessman. Each summer they sell propane for 99 cents per gallon (when demand is the highest), no matter the market rate. They provide free water and a free dump station as well. In addition, it's a great spot to overnight when your other choice might be Walmart.....

We continued driving north on Highway 93 and we finally arrived at our planned destination.....St. Ignatius, Montana. When the thought of settling down and building a log cabin comes to my mind.....well, that thought usually will include St. Ignatius, Montana.....

Now I had made a list of all the properties that I thought might make a good place to call home.....

One of my favorite properties was a forty acre tract owned by an 88 year old rancher. The property had astounding views of the Mission Mountains to the east, and it had two wonderful ponds that spoke to both me and Tanner. I would have bought this property but unfortunately the rancher had never subdivided his property and legally he was unable to sell it.....

20200525_165323_copy_1200x583.jpg

One day while wandering around the valley we saw this historic church and just had to stop and investigate.....

I love those flowers. That would be beautiful to see every year, assuming they are seasonal.

That looks like an awesome place to live. So many parks and forests right by you.

"..the rancher had never subdivided his property and legally he was unable to sell it .."

Excuse my ignorance, please, but I found that an intriguing remark as here people say you can't but officially you can - just some hoops to jump through as we just did in order to buy about half of what we call "Cadastre Plot".

Does that mean in Montana you can't "divide" your property in smaller parts these days ?

How difficult does that make when you have t sell / inherit ?

Sorry to ask..

ITTOG.....the flowers are indeed seasonal and some of them are considered to be noxious weeds (I have no idea which are). Montana is fairly strict with noxious weed control and many areas require the landowner to spray chemicals on them to keep them in control. The 88 year old rancher that I bonded with grazes cattle instead so I guess they can take care of the problem as well. I too was very into all the spring colors. Spring in Arizona.....then spring in Montana.....

Arjan.....it's not the state government that controls the subdivision of land.....each county has its own restrictions. In this particular area the county government requires the landowner to go through a lengthy process which typically takes 12 to 18 months. Many counties have a process where you can do a Family Transfer of land and you can subdivide your land but only sell / give it to a family member. This process typically would not include the lenghty county reviews. Again, every jurisdiction has its own rules and guidelines.....so not an easy question to answer.....

Some nights we spent along county roads.....some nights we spent along the side of Highway 93 in the Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge. This place is absolutely amazing and hiking here through the fields and the forests occupied much of our time when we weren't searching for land.....

The Mission Mountains to the east jut up from the valley floor roughly 6,000 vertical feet.....these views captivate me and I never lose my infatuation with them.....

There are (36) named peaks in the Mission Mountain Range....such as McDonald Peak (9,2820'), Glacier Peaks (9,407'), Daughter of the Sun (8,777'), Gray Wolf Peak (9,001'), Mountaineer Peak (9,261'), and Mount Calowahcan (9,061').....someday I hope to climb each one.....

20200527_184626_copy_1200x2469.jpg

The National Bison Range borders the southwestern side of the valley.....to the east are the lands of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Nation as well as the 73,877 acre Mission Mountain Wilderness Area. This tribe is the first tribe in the nation to designate some of its lands as wilderness area.....

20200527_184550_copy_1200x583.jpg

There are several trout filled, crystal clear reservoirs nearby.....on the eastern side of the valley is the Mission Reservoir and driving north a bit is the Kicking Horse Reservoir.....

If you drive even further north you'll encounter Flathead Lake.....one of America's most beautiful lakes. Of course we hung out there too.....pictures forthcoming.....

Thank you very much - another inside look on real life in the US.

Sounds like a rather complicated way of keeping control the way this land dividing system works..

Love the pictures !!!!!
