Arjan.....it can be overwhelming at times trying to deal with local governments. This is actually what I did for a living for most of my adult life. I sold my business at a rather young age for this very reason (and employees). It wears a man down. I prefer the simplier life of wandering or living in a log cabin than the life of pursing more money.....
ITTOG.....we all need that.....especially during these times.....
Sadly I would leave the valley just as I had come to the valley.....homeless.....wandering.....
Lately I've been thinking a lot about my "situation".....I'm beginning to think of myself more as being homeless than I do think of myself as being a wanderer / traveler.....
And I've begun to wonder and ponder.....what really is the difference between a wanderer and a homeless man.....is it as simple as saying that choice is what separates the two.....
I sure do wonder often about this.....
Maybe it really doesn't matter.....since it is what it is.....

Yesterday was the third anniversary of the death of my traveling buddy & best friend Montana.....these anniversaries are always such a sad, sad day.....
Anyhow, we would finally leave the valley and we would continue north.....on the way out Tanner and I made a last stop at the barn where Yukon was born.....
Miss her so much.....
I'm way behind on my posting.....lots more to post up.....we've been on the road.....
.....enjoying our freedom.....

Jerry, your last several posts of pictures are really beautiful! I've always enjoyed the way you illustrate your writing with photos. For some reason, seems like these most recent ones have kicked it up a notch! New phone? Just being back in Montana?

Checking in on your updates is often a welcome peaceful moment of my day. If I didn't already have thoughts of a cabin in Montana when I'm older and kids are out, I sure as hell do now. Yukon's birthplace looks like a fitting beginning for the adventures you provided her.
I will be seeing some of Montana in person in less than a week as I rented a trailer and will be taking my family out that way to Yellowstone from Wisconsin at the end of this week.

We have "cherish days" for when our dogs were born and decided to join us for a while in our lives.
It is never easy - it shouldn't be easy. But we cherish them, reflect on good times we've been blessed to have and look forward seeing them again. You def. upped the pics - looking forward to what's coming.
Not sure it is homeless - I used the word "un-rooted" when I lived in 3 countries for 6 years. I never really was "home"

Hey Jerry,,,,,, here are my thoughts, for you to "Ponder", on your situation.... if one is Homeless, it's usually not by choice, as in your case, you have chosen to "Wander",,,, thats a "Big" difference,,,,, from being Homeless,,,,,, your Home just happens to have "Wheels", and there is nothing wrong with that,,,, so...... "Ponder that".......
Anyway, thats my thoughts, you and Tanner be Safe, and Wander-On.

I remember a classification of one that wanders as either a rubber hobo (RV), or leather (hiker/walker). From the movie where the kids dies in Alaska in an old school bus. I know the name will pop in my head as soon as I hit reply.

Tgil, ITTOG, Arjan.....still using the same phone / camera for the pictures so it's easy to conclude that any differences you're seeing are related to the beauty of that particular area and in addition I'd include that the time of the year also makes a difference.....spring in Montana is special.....
BigDawwg, Ace, PKDreamers.....I'm currently camped on my friends property and am able to visit with some of my friends. I think it's during these times when I meet with friends and they return to their homes that it really emphasizes the fact that I have no home to return to. The real estate market in Montana is on fire right now.....two friends here in Montana that are in the business say that out of state people are flocking here due to the coronavirus pandemic and are driving the prices up even further. I think that every log cabin that I had earmarked to see in the state is now under contract and this just happened in the last few weeks. I made a verbal offer with an agent a few days ago on a log cabin on 20 acres with a nice barn, a pond, fenced and cross fenced, with sensational views. My offer was full price, all cash, no inspection, no appraisal, AS IS, and I never had a chance to visit the property. The listing agent said don't waste your time with that offer.....I continue to wander.....
blanketslayer.....that sounds like a great trip (post a trip report please). I'm currently not too far from Yellowstone and the weather has been horrendous lately. That's probably good news cause it has to change soon. I'd encourage you to bring your wet weather gear as well as your winter gear. No doubt coming from Wisconsin you've got what you need. I'm guessing with the coronavirus the crowds will be much smaller.....enjoy and be safe and thanks for following my travels.....
As we left the valley and headed north I was torn between going directly to Flathead Lake or making a significant detour to swing by Hot Springs, Montana. I got onto Google Maps, found a backroads route and decided that the lake could wait. Our route took us along the meanders of the Snake River.....
Much of the land here is owned by the tribes and it looks as it has since the beginning of time (except for the gravel road of course).....other areas have been developed by the white man.....it's truly a mix.....
Just like the flight of the geese our drive took us further north.....
Later that day we arrived at the Wild Horse Hot Springs located in Hot Springs, Montana. Finally something was open.....it had now been 110 days since I'd soaked in a hot spring.....and it's been quite a bit longer than that since I've had a real shower.....one of the effects of coronavirus on the traveler.....
I was a bit uncomfortable with the number of guests here but I had my own hot tub so social distancing was not an issue. There's a blue handle in the picture below.....if you opened that valve the water rushed out at 121 degrees.....it was phenomenal.....
Once I was thoroughly cooked I decided that it was now Tanner time.....
.....and it was very, very late that afternoon that we headed for the lake.....

.....on the highway that took us east through some beautiful ranch lands surrounded by mountain peaks still covered in blankets of snow.....
Old barns have always been an attraction for me and often I'll stop to photograph them.....this one I felt was particularly stunning.....
Our first sight of Flathead Lake was from way up high as the highway provided us with sensational views of the southern shores of the lake.....we descended down the mountain and arrived at the crystal clear waters of Flathead Lake.....
We camped near the lake for several days and we spent those days mostly hiking along the lakes rocky shoreline.....we saw the sun rise and we saw the sun set.....
I gave thought to getting out one of the kayaks and paddling for a bit but I decided against it.....I'm really not sure why.....
I was content on the shoreline I guess.....and Tanner was having the time of his life. Certainly for being a retriever, he doesn't get near the time that he deserves in the water.....

Glad you are back home. Pictures are amazing as usual. Don't think you can go wrong in Montana. Just got caught up as we spent a couple weeks travel the Natchez Trace Parkway from Nashville to Natchez. Stopped at the cabin and burial place for Merriwether Lewis. Hopefully the cabin will happen. Plan on spending time at Flathead Lake next September. You and Tanner be safe. JD

JD.....I had to Google Natchez Trace Parkway and it sure does look like a real nice place. Suicide Bridge ? Yikes ! I don't know that area (yet).....maybe one day. And thanks.....finding the cabin is turning out to be quite the chore.....
So the days at the lake were Tanner days.....dog days.....they were wonderful days.....days to be remembered.....
Tanner spent his days at the lake exploring.....that's one of the great things about dogs.....they were born to explore.....
.....and when given the opportunity they seize that moment and live it as if it was their last moment in life.....
Tanner swam in those ice cold waters for what seemed like an eternity.....he never wanted to come out.....
.....he never tired.....not once.....
A chance find of a baby doll at the lake.....
.....gave us an opportunity to practice search and rescue.....
.....and the gentle bite of a Golden Retriever allowed the baby doll to live on.....
But nothing is forever.....the lake was like a dreamworld for Tanner.....but eventually there's always the real world that we have to return to.....and we have to move on down the highway once again.....that's just what we do.....
