I recently built a kitchen box and considered the front swing open design for a cutting board, stove countertop, etc... forget counter-balancing and the possibility of heavier items removed, could put your gourmet dinner and all said contents on the ground. Choosing to go with a swing over design is something that I borrowed from DRIFTA http://www.drifta.com.au/index.php these are proven designs that had me (re) considering my orginal design. Overall, opting for more "counter-top" will keep your GF, wife, you happy as you will have a place for your cooking items. Your plan for 1/2" and 1/4" is very notable and is a good balance for durability and weight, overall dimensions of your box are similiar to my design and should help the box "nest" neatly with other cargo. http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42997 / #3 Good work! Kitchen box concept - ROUND II.
Here is the latest. The darker, pear wood color is 1/4" ply whereas the lighter color is 1/2" ply. I will be going with birch and likely clear coating it.
The slots on the top serve as handles when it is all packed up and the holes on the middle vertical is for weight reduction. It reduced in size a touch. Final dimensions, 29" wide x 14" deep x 22' high

With using 1/2 birch you should have no problem with the angle at the top. Just use a good wood glue like Elmers water resistant or Gorilla glue and several screws. If you are worried about that being strong enough you can make gussets at the end on the inside just so it clears when the lid is closed.
By the way it looks great. Two more ideas. One, it looked like there are supports under the dark wood? If so you could eliminate that by routing slots (or datto) and sliding it together, saving more weight. Also you can use sheet aluminum (2) in a triangle shape on your lid that fold down to the side for a wind break. They would add a positive lock to keep the lid up. Its a very similar design to what I have done, except mine has a little more length. I use the CRAP out of my kitchen box, and it has held up remarkably well. I also used 12mm birch ply. I have tweaked it to get it perfect over the years, but its an awesome camping addition.

I have an ECamper so am on the lightweight side of the equipment range here. I do however take it places the Honda engineers never imagined and do a fair amount of dry camping in the southwest.
Given that the entrance to the ECamper requires one to climb up into it, I designed my box to be strong enough to use as a stool as well. Its all 1/2 inch plywood with the exception of the back. It was designed to hold a typical Coleman 2 burner stove as well as a Coleman lantern plus all the various utensils needed to cook for 2. Its not light but I dont move it that often.
Love the forum and have learned a ton. Thanks

Thanks for all the input during the build of my little project. Here it is... :victory:
all that is remaining is to put on the top hinges and paint / stain it.
Note - there were a couple of changes made:
1. The drawers were replaced with the plastic bins. Cheaper and lighter.
2. I removed the lower shelf. Simply not needed really.
3. Added the front decorative lip to the stove area. Not only looks good, but squared up the top edges as well.
4. Added a custom propane tank holder. Made from 1.25" aluminum stock riveted to a 4" PVC drain pipe cap. Works GREAT!! :wings:
5. Planning to add a battery operated LED light to the underside of the lid for evening use.

I'm late to the commenting party so I hope this question doesn't put a monkey wrench into things now that you're nearly done....
I thought the disposable propane tanks were supposed to be used at an angle? (i.e. that's why the inlet pipe is angled the way it usually is, so that if everything is sitting on a table the tank is angled correctly).
Now, I'm a Coleman-fuel user, myself, so I can't offer any practical experience, I'm speaking from theoretical knowledge here... Worst scenario I would guess maybe you get a little less burn time from a tank?
Anyone else know?
EDIT: Or is it just that the tank shouldn't be inverted, so that you're always drawing gas, not liquid?
