I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who appreciates something familiar but unique. I can't take credit for it's condition obviously, but thanks for all of the comments.
I was blown away by the condition as my expectations weren't very high during the drive down to see it. Honestly, were it not for the excellent interior condition and low miles, even with the turbo and cool digital dash, I probably would have left it on the lot. A miled up filthy rig, no matter how rare it is, is still just a miled up filthy rig. But 124K miles is
low and I don't think the back seat has ever been sat in or at least not very often.
I did some more driving around today, getting a feel for it. It really is fun to scoot around town in. Backing out of a parking space was so easy without having to look around the FWC. The turning radius is much tighter than the truck. The AT isn't an issue with me, actually it's my preference. A very fun ride overall.
Re: the turbo. The turbo unit is relatively new. It was replaced in December and the old unit was included in the sale. So I'm fortunate to have one on hand for a rebuild if necessary. A turbo off a Supra is also a possibility too, as I've just learned. I've got a lot of reading to do on 22RTE-trucks.com.
The turbo engages much like the TRD supercharger. At about 1900 RPMs the boost indicator gauge starts lighting up and you can feel the additional pull where it normally should top out and start shifting. It's not a stomp it and romp it effect, but more gradual (and yeah, a little whiny...) additional horsepower. Fortunately I have the discipline to not get into it too much. But it's fun to know it's there if needed.
I've been meaning to check the VIN tag or door jamb for a build date. If it's an '87 model, that means it likely was originally sold in '88. That's the same year I graduated from high school. Driving around today and looking at it outside of my office window, I kept thinking,
"Where have you been and what have you seen in the last 20 years?" I wonder....
I'm trying not to love it. As JohnB mentioned, it would be good barter materiel to trade for a FJ62. I could also sell it to someone with NOLS here in town and make a good return on my money. Or I could just leave it as is and see if I can reap the projected 21 mpg's as a 4wd DD.
And yet I can't help but think how it would look with some real (black) rims, a little OME love, some tube bumpers, the gnarliest 31's I can find, maybe a Can-Back top, the Engel 45 in the back, and on and on.....
