My M100 build

I have decided I don't want a spring over. It will raise it to high. I think I will run 1.5" lift springs, since it would be cheap insurance to replace the 57 yr old originals..

I have heard that the OME front Samurai springs will bolt up.

Its removing the 57 yr old spring bushings and shackle bolts that concerns me..

Wife picked up this sweet Kelty Car Port at REI on clearence..

I used some free legs for an awning on the tent side.
It rained on us this weekend and it came in handy to have the extra space.

I did end up cutting down the toung, its just long enough to clear the tire swing.

My springs are fairly worn out.. Anyone know the spring rates of the factory springs? I would like to find 1"-2" taller springs, and switch to a standard shackel setup. If it gets too costly I will consider building my own trailing arm design..

Was that at a local store or an online clearance?

It was at a local REI. I believe Kelty has a new model coming out, so this one is on markdown. This was also marked down again I believe.

It comes with two poles to set the end up. You can see here I have it laying on top of the Mombasa. It worked this way, but I didnt like the way it stressed the tent, so I found some legs for the front. Its a quality product. I would buy one at full price. I see it working on any vehical I have, and after it held up in a pretty serious rain windstorm, (in the lean too posistion) I am very happy.

Last week this was marked down to $219, and wife siad this one was 50% off of that. May check your local REI or give them a call.

Great story and great build. Hope you don't mind if I steal a few ideas for my trailer. I also have an M100 I pull behind my FJ40 and have kept it mostly stock, but that may have to change. Just curious what your serial # is. Mine is 01169486 with a delivery date of 4-51.

I have the serial in the garage. It has a date of 5/51.

I have kept all the original parts, and everything I have added is bolted on.

West Texas Trip.. Pulled it over 400 miles one way with no issues. Notice the chocks.. I broke part of the linkage on the parking brake. Should be an easy part to fab. Joys of 57 year old equipment.

Anyone have a source for springs? Thoughts on keeping the C-Shackle? Seems some of the aftermarket lift springs require you to switch to a true plate style shackle.

If you want to ditch the c shackle get the "better shackles" they sell for cj2a-early(pre75)5.. They all used the same front springs in either 7, 8, 9, or 10 leaf spring packs,, 36 1/4" long by 1 3/4" wide.. That way you can still use you spring perches on the axle and frame,, yj springs or newer cj's are wider 2 1/4 +? cant remember exactly how wide,, but wider,, and much longer than the 36 1/4" length..

highlandercj-7 - The YJ leafs are 2 1/2" wide. The same as rear CJ-7/8's 4wd sells a mount kit that will allow you to put them right onto a trailer. Here's the link.

That’s not a bad idea. However, that would require modifying the trailer frame. I know I could do it, and I have several sets of CJ/YJ springs lying around. However, I think if I do become unhappy with the current set up I will design a sub frame with independent trailing arms, using coil over’s or air bags. You could make the entire sub assebly bolt on, so not to modify the original frame. With the price of steel coming down, I may entertain this.

If your that worried about changing the frame from orginal. I'd take the tub off the trailer build a new frame out of 2x3 box tubing and store the org one above your garage or something. That way you can modd the heck out of it and not worry about it. I built my Cj trailer using spare parts that I had laying around the shop. I used a couple sticks of 2x3x3/16" they were fairly cheap.

I thought of doing this when I bought the trailer. However, the M-100 is not bolted to the frame, it is welded on. While not impossible to seperate the two, it will not be easy.
