My new FJ80

After selling my Jeep Wrangler and a three week search, I joined the ranks of the Landcruiser owners. It's a 92 with 180,000 miles.

The previous owner invested about $10,000 in transmission and transfer case overhaul, exhaust, tires and a lot of preventative maintenance. I have a few minor things to fix.

Now to get it ready for adventures.

El Gringo Spectacular!
Almost exactly like mine when I started the build up. Excellent all around rigs.

Congrats.

Nice! Sounds like a good chunk of upkeep has been done. Do you know the front axle service history? I've got around 195,000 miles on my '92 and am planning on keeping it for the long haul. I think its one of the best mixes of old school technology and modern comfort available.

What do you have planned for it? Is it lifted slightly right now? Looks like it in the pic.

Congrats!

The front end has been serviced and it looks like seals and wheel bearings have been replaced and the birfs recently serviced. No clicking noises and even better - no clunking in the drivetrain.

I'm not sure about the current suspension, its running 31 inch BFG AT's with a nice driver side lean.

I'll hopefully be throwing on ARB suspension in the next few weeks. The rest of the buildup comes when funds are available.

I personally suggest the 850j/864 combo makes the 80s ride SOOOO much better. The 91/92 FJ80s were the best expedition platform years IMO, great choice, plus I love the look of those stock 15" wheels!

I was considering running the 850/863 combo because I will be light in the rear and later invest into heavier rear springs when I have some money to invest into tire carrier/bumper, aux fuel tank etc.

I concur about not going straight for the 864's in the rear. Heavy rear bumpers never seem to arrive as fast as anticipated and the ride sertainly beats you up without it...

Now Durango_60 enjoys the finer luxuries in life like fine supple leather seats, fireproof camp tables, and local expensive brews. Unlike the most of us, he prefers the Cadillac feel to his Cruisers ;)

The rear 863s in my 80 sat significantly lower than the front 850s when even very lightly loaded. The shortest of trips produced the saggin' wagon effect. I went through another set of 863s thinking that would solve it, only the 864s solved the issue. Your mileage may vary.

Scott, do you have a bullbar on your rig? I can't recall. My truck with 850/863's sits ass high, quite a bit actually. I have an ARB bull bar and the seats removed in the back, along with the stock bumper. When I have it loaded to the gills inside and on the roof basket, I sit perfectly level. Another note, I don't have sliders either. Maybe I'm just lighter in the back then you Scott.

Yes, with ridiculous heavy M12k :) I do have sliders, a rear tire carrier, rear seats (;)). Moderately loaded with 2 kids in the back, 864s have the perfect rake (slightly ass high).

Okay, now we're just getting personal. I know I need to lay off those candy bars...
