I can give a few ideas for storage in the back of a TJ, even though I have a LJ. I have always worried about security and dust in the open top Jeep...
I know you have had a bad taste of Tuffy products and hope you may still find some ideas here. I have sort of built my rear storage around a TJ Tuffy big box mostly because I had it already. (it cost alot more now to.:Wow1
. I have to admit it is a high quality piece and works as designed, it's sealed and secure......
The Jeep is great to live with after 5 years of evolution, everything has it's place and is easy to reach. The big box is turned around and raised up for access even while driving, thanks to the struts, and the small front door even allows some access when stuff is on top. I used aluminum plate to seal the box sides to the body and have storage cubbys underneath and shelves on top. The lockable area under the box is 8" tall and covers almost the whole floor, I keep the heavy or expensive stuff here. I left it ventilated so it will dry and keep everything under there in a case or bag. I was going to put some Accuride sliders along the walls of the lower storage and have a pull out drawer or shelf, but have not done it yet. (It would be nice just to sit on.) A full width would be easy in your Jeep.
I have a Geneva tool box that is made for truck beds mounted in the back, it is accessed when you open the tailgate. The door opens under the softtop rear window bar, this has been a great way to store things you need quickly without dealing with muddy zippers, Highly recommended......
I used some Buggy stuff from Poly Perf for my lockable captured oil storage bin, and buggy bag. I even used some aluminum race trailer storage stuff. I also like the Partner steel River rafting boxes but only have one of their high quality stoves..
Good luck on your new storage setup............
