Stand up paddling is fun and it's a pretty good workout. It's not cheap but I saw that Costco was selling soft-board setups for around $450. Why not just take surfing up again? If you need it to be free, body surfing is great, in another month or so you will be able to skin it in SD.

Look up FitDeck. Basicly its a deck of cards with exercises on them. easy to carry in your pocket for a workout any time and not to much money. They have several different versions. The bycycle is also a great option. Didn't relize how much I missed mine until Saturdaywhen I got the parts to repair it and make it rideable again. It was like finding a long lost friend.

thats actually really cool. The simple idea of shuffling the deck to keep it interesting, would definitely be neat.

Might work for my wife AND I, since "the deck" would decide what we do.

Yeah, see, I used to road bike to school and back, when I was up in Davis going to college. Couldn't afford to pay for parking on campus. I got into road biking/mtn. biking, etc... but here in San Diego, I only work 20miles away from home, but it'd be REALLY hard to get there on a bike. Might be something to consider, though.

I'd recommend finding a big ol' hill or a mountain, load up a pack, and hike it. You're going to burn a lot of calories and get your heart rate up, and it will work every single muscle in your body and improve your balance and agility.

Another thing that has worked for me in the past is doing circuit work outs. So I would run flat out for a couple hundred yards, then do push ups for a minute, then run more, then a minute of sit ups or something, and every once in a while just walk a bit instead of run. I remember reading somewhere that for some reason working out like that is more effective then just running or just doing calisthenics.

Treadmill, if you don't mind the initial investment, and Planet Earth. Each episode is about an hour long, and plenty of beautiful scenery to look at. I usually run, but if I am training for an upcoming hike or something, I'll load up some dumbells and pillows into my pack, set the incline to 10%, and walk for a while.

If you want to get your O2 uptake up... nothing better than cyling.
If you want to strengthen your core and hips... walk with a heavy pack.
For a good mix and a solid overall workout... nothing better than swimming.

x2 on both of those, especially the hiking. I'm not sure exactly where in town you are, but there's some great hills around. Woodson, Cowles, etc.

Personally, I found the best thing to get me in shape (which I'm not in right now) was to own a high energy dog. I hike him to wear him out and keep me in shape.

Also, depending on your interest and part of town you live in, I know someone who's part owner of a Crossfit gym in Kearney Mesa, I think.

Whoops, double post. Sorry.

If motivation is an issue try setting a real goal. I find it hard to stick to the be "more" active, lose "some" weight type of goal. I always have to have a metric in mind to keep me motivated to do things consistently.

ie. My last goal was to run my first 5K in less than 30 min. Signing up for a race gave me a deadline to meet that goal. I missed the goal by 28 seconds. But I did it in hawaii on the second to last day of my vacation, I blame it on a combination of high humidity and 9 days of mai tais.

But it got me out putting in the road work for 6 weeks prior to the race. Its motivated me to sign up for the next one so I can beat my goal. Already have the end of summer goal which is going to be a set time for the La Jolla rough water swim in September.

Have fun.

And I'm hooked on Stand Up paddling after the hawaii trip but it ain't cheap!

You can check out a site called..bodyweightculture..i think thats the name.
It basically has work out with everyday items...no gym machines...just your own bodyweight and playground equipment or stuff around the home....

Want fun and a great work out all in the same package? Looking into traction kiting. I had a blast with my "little" 1.9 meter kite but had to send it back due to a blown cell. When the wind is up in the mid teens, it takes everything you have to keep it under control. Every muscle in my body was sore but mostly my lats and triceps. Your stomach and legs get a crazy workout as well. I see you are in San Diego so you have plenty of beach access and steady winds, you are good to go. When my Peter Lynn Twister II 3m comes to me this week I will be in the hurt locker for sure. This kite isn't even on the same planet as the trainer 1.9m. Even as small as 3m, the Twister will lift and drag my 200lbs around like a rag doll. After I get the 3m down, I plan in getting a 5m so I can get into jumping like this guy:

This thread got me to go look at the FitDeck. Oddly, I know the owner. He's a local SD guy and also does some Cross Fit training.

I'm pretty much in the same boat myself. Trying to drop some weight and get back in shape. I've been walking 2 miles around my block everyday and hiking up Cowles Mountain every other day, with a couple bigger hikes a few times a month. I guess I've been setting a good example, as my wife and sister have started joining me.

I just got back from hiking out to Three Sisters Waterfalls the other day out in the Cleveland National Forest. For me hiking is the way to go. I'm out seeing interesting stuff and enjoying the exercise.

I need some idea's on stuff I can do thats:

-gonna keep me moving/breathin' hard
-not expensive
-not boring
-can be done anywhere
-easy on my joints
-does not involve jogging...haha
-is effective in 30-45mins per day

Judo is cheap and a great strength and cardio workout. No promises on the joints though. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Bad knees and back here.
When I was in San Diego I too made a point of walking Iron Mt., Mt. Woodson, around Poway Lake on early Sat., Sun. mornings. Cost you a pair of shoes and is pretty easy on the knees. Do the telecomm access road to Woodson, You'll love it. Your often rewarded with a nice view at the top. Marine layer settled in between the mountains, blue sky, gives you that cool spiritual feeling.

Nice, I've been meaning to head out there before it gets to hot out.
