Very helpful, thanks!

I too am in the weight loss game. I was looking at the rhino, but the material at 210 vs the Darche 320gsm has me concerned. Is that difference worth $350 or a big deal?

The canvas on the Darche is definitely nicer. That price delta also includes the fact that it’s self supporting, and has an all aluminum arm / hinge construction vs plastic hinges.

After snapping 2 of the 4 Delrin hinges on my RR Batwing‘s maiden voyage I’d say the $350 price delta is manageable. True, it was a freak desert dust devil, but very discouraging. Full disclosure: it was a simple fix that could be managed in the field.

I have the Batwing by Rhino and don't have an appreciation for the material thickness vs UV protection stuff. Rhino says that the awning is xxxx SPF or whatever and I don't really care as something is better than nothing in the Southwest! But, I'd like a free standing for quick deployment and not worry about poles. My poles are attached to the rafters (or whatever we're calling them) and easy to swing down but they have to be staked down, otherwise, a wind gust will Fubar the whole enchilada!

In order to help people connect the vendor names with the awning pics w/o having to scroll up/down, would you mind updating your post with the manufacturer's name? This is a GREAT shot of your setup and the doggo!!!! I miss my doggo something fierce.

Question for a Darche unit - how much are the individual walls and who seem to have the best price? May I have a pic of the area where the wall is attached to the awning please? i'm wondering if my Batwing walls can be zipped on to the Darche awning.

Thanks.

Why not get two left rhinorack batwings and make a 360 degree awning?

I recently fitted up a 360 Ghost Awn by RLD. The vaulted ceiling is a really nice feature. It has 6 poles and is more rigid than I was expecting. I weighed it at 48.1 lbs not including the roof rack brackets. It throws massive shade and the fabric is very thick. It deploys super quick, but close up takes a few minutes longer and a bit more work, mainly to get all the fabric gathered. It also may be a bit larger than some would prefer when it’s closed up on the side of the vehicle. It’s pretty amazing all the options there are nowadays with awnings. 823DDFDC-5F8A-4DF4-B85A-D3E065E14937.jpeg

I'm curious if this awning can be setup w/o any poles, unless of course, the wind is strong. The price is now $999

Features: 129 Square Feet of Freestanding Covered Shelter, 600D Poly Cotton Rip-Stop Cover, Boxed Aluminum Rafters, Pivoting Aluminum Adjustable Poles, Tie Down Points for Securing Poles and Water Run Off,...
FULL DESCRIPTION
Expected release date is Dec 1st 2019
I set mine up without poles sometime but, since they are already attached to the rafters it only takes a few minutes to drop them down.

The Batwing is what convinced me I wanted a 270 degree awning it also convinced me I wanted one that was much stronger with metal hinges. SO I ended up with the OVS and it has done very well for me.

I take the same approach with the poles. I could set it up without but they're already there and it takes maybe 15 additional seconds to drop them down? I only deploy the two on the side. It's super easy to do, makes it more stable, and takes stress off the hinge. I just dont see a reason not to do it.

I will say when it comes to these 270 awnings, I didn't go with Batwing or 23zero or RLD and some others because the back panel wasn't square. I wanted something that provided square coverage over the rear of the vehicle. With RLD specifically, I don't see the benefit of paying more money just to get the angled rear panel (that I don't want, AND to cover the front of the car. Just seems a little useless to me but that's the way I use mine I suppose.
