19’s are standard. Lucky 8 said 20’s are the new 18’s because there aren’t many 19” off road tires.

Llc8 - 18" wont fit even with heavy spacers. 19" selection sucks so you are forced to 20" which is low profile. Argh.

And?

My RRS is still on 275/55R20 road tyres and it goes 95% everywhere the Defenders go when we're out on trails.

When the tyres need replacing, there's lots of choice in 20", and then I'll be going 100% where the Defenders go.

The 4 cylinder has 4.11 gears and the 6 has 3.55 gears in the differential. Since I don't plan on running 130 mph in an SUV I'm guessing I'll do fine with the 4, plus it's a bunch less expensive and should get better mileage. Fuel range is king for overland expeditions. I'll be happy if I can get over 450 miles between fillups. My Discovery 5 will get over 600 miles range at interstate speeds (diesel V-6).

Actually the P400 inline 6 should get marginally better gas mileage than the P300 4-cyl engine, surely due to its built-in mild hybrid EV technology. Recently released EPA estimates are 17 mpg city, 20 highway, 18 average/combined for the P300 and 17 city, 22 highway and 19 combined for the MHEV P400 engine. With a fuel tank capacity of 23.8 gallons, we'll be lucky to get 400 miles between fill-ups with either engines. Still a major improvement over my V8 LR4, which never quite seems to make it to a 300-mile range between fill-ups.

Those 18s in the Lucky8 photo appear to be Compomotives PD1880... Damned, I had high hopes for them. :mad:

4 cyl is to small. I shouldn't have to "swap brakes" for 18" wheels. Plain poor design choice by LR. Reeks of LR engineers being shocked at how bigger tires work well off road.

Another internet expert who can out design an entire engineering department with a single keystroke!

How do we keep messing things up as an engineering community? The answers are right there for free on internet message boards! LOL

Of course, somebody/anybody could point out that a 255/65/19 duratrac has only 3% less (that's 7mm, or only 1/4") less sidewall than the LARGEST non-OE duratrac you can run on an 18" LR3/LR4. The standard tire on the LR3, no trimming/rubbing/etc? It has less sidewall than the Defender.

So. P400 with 19"s it is!!!!

I think perhaps you misunderstood the video

Not at all. The new Defender is the replacement for the LR4, a virtual LR5, while the Discovery 5 moves to a new product segment that is more Subaruish. Land Rover stated that strategy many years ago with the 3 product line roadmap. No one should be surprised.

Land Rover could have restyled the LR4, dropped it on the RRS chassis, opened the wheel arches, dropped in the next gen power train, updated the infotainment and called it a Defender and everyone would be raving about the 'new Defender'.

They could do (what you wrote above), and they'd be raving about it!
They could make a (Wrangler Rubicon), and they'd be raving about it!
But if they build what the engineering, marketing, and sales team agreed upon? NOPE, GARBAGE. You heard it here first by our automotive R&D expert.

Land Rover told you what their strategy was years ago. I'm not surprised that they executed that strategy. The problem for JLR is that it left a $8 billion dollar hole in the financials to get there.

That's kind of what they did, no? Restyled the LR4 with Defender design cues, dropped it on a (reinforced) RRS chassis, opened the wheel arches, dropped in the latest power trains, updated the infotainment system, improved the EAS system and gave it even more ginormous brakes. Other than the last item, as current LR4 and former RRS owner, and long time OG Defender fan, I am one of those raving about this new Defender.

If we can sweet talk a tire company into introducing a new, capable A/T tire in a size that currently doesn't exist (I am thinking a 275/65R19 would be just about perfect for a P400 engine...), we will be golden! ? If the new Defender sells in the high numbers we all hope for, Nitto, Toyo, General, Goodyear or someone else might. Or, perhaps Bowler will design an 18" rim that fits without spacers over these big brakes, like they did for their Nemesis almost 15 years ago (Compomotive sold lots of PD1880 to RRS and LR4 owners as a result.) For now, the stock and optional off-road tires that come with the new Defender will be perfectly appropriate.

Agreed. Now all that is needed is a diesel engine and 18" wheels ............ :cool:

So on one hand I have read that sales of the Defender have been strong, and then this article says "only 22,000 units have been ordered" and that is disappointing...

If the goal was to reach 100,000 units globally (which is what I had read many times over the last few years), it seems 22,000 so far is not that bad, but then again, they have been making them since October so that is 7 months already that the order books have been open...

22K is nothing in the bigger picture. We've gone from $50K Defenders to $90K plus in 6 months. I'm guessing the first edition markups are partly the issue but I'm getting this uneasy feeling that the post-covid effects are now being seen. Been looking at travel trailers and the 2021 models are hitting the dealers at 8% to 10% higher pricing for virtually the same camper, models that have been in production for a few years. The cost of the economic shutdown has to be paid for somehow over fewer units. For JLR their fixed cost need to be paid plus the all the debt they have incurred.

JLR won't hit their volume and financial goals if Defenders are $75K+ .................
