New Four Wheel UTE Flat Bed Model Coming Soon ...

Cool. That cabover is still off to me but as long as you'll offer folks one that is full depth I think that is a great setup.

I take it you decided to through bolt the floor then?

I was looking at mine over the weekend, I think my first attempt will be brackets off my jack brackets to the bed perimeter but I don't see that working for the rear of this one, it'd need some brackets in those lower corners too.

Starting this Fall, Dodge is planning to offer the 1500 pickup with the Grand Cherokee's 3.0L diesel, 8 speed transmission, and 4x4. That vehicle would make a fantastic platform for the new flatbed FWC (provided you don't expect to travel to Mexico and points south, due to poor availability of low sulfur diesel fuel).

For a while, Chevrolet offered the UTE flatbed as an option on the Colorado pickup. The new Colorado will be available this Fall, and it's possible that the flatbed will return as an option. Now if Colorado gets the four cylinder diesel from the Cruze sedan, we'll have another cool option for a flatbed camper that would be easy to order from the factory.

Some sort of lost...
Eight speed auto from Chrysler? Good god what a nightmare in the making!

Seriously though, this pop-up looks good and very practical. Glad to see someone finally going this route in the states.

I think I am going to need a moment alone. Don't look!!!!!

I have been designing out a camper for my s10 and debating back and forth on flat bed just to get more camper floor/truck storage space. This just might push me over the edge to rip the bed off the truck.

yeah...but also pretty dang huge...but I'm not sure I would want to invest that coin on a tacoma and its pathetic payload

much better for a 1/2 ton IMO

True. I showed the girlfriend the FWC and the XP...she gave a thumbs down (too big) she likes the Flip Pac better, said: keep it simple stupid. :ylsmoke:

Why I am liking lx450landcruiser's, tray aluminum flip pac redo, can't wait to see when he finishes it. Will be waaay more nimble on the trail than the FWC or XP.

I still have this crazy idea, that I will manufacture an updated Wildernest.

Isn't true that Chevy and Dodge own just about equal shares of the company that manufactures the diesel engine the Ram truck is getting?

Quite possible that the Colorado will receive the same engine, yes?

Relax -- the 8 speed is sourced from ZF. It's been on the road since 2010. Other customers for this type of transmission include BMW, Audi, and Mercedes. This transmission has interesting fuel-saving options: stop/start mode and electric hybrid assist. I expect we'll see these in Chrysler products in a year or two.

"compact camper"?

maybe if it was on a standard cab tacoma but on a double cab no way.

i would like to see a real world weight ticket with water fuel 2 passengers
(normal weight people!) and all the normal gear people carry.

do not forget the heavy over size wheels and tires and spare gas cans
after market bumpers winch jacks etc that most expo rigs end up with.

that being said i like the whole concept now if toyota would get with the program
and make a truck to match!

as a one time owner of tacos and fwc i know you will be over the weight limit
unless you forgo all extras.

now if fwc would do "custom order" units built the way the customer wants
i might think about a new "toy"

just my thoughts yours way differ.

Looks amazing! This is my favorite truck camper by far. Interested to see how it compares with the XP camper when kitted up with some options.

BTW, with the fiberglass sides is it possible to get it painted in a custom color (e.g. like that red Jeep with the matching red 4WC camper)?

^^^Exactly. My truck weighs 7500lbs with the armor/tires/winch. Once I add the camper (hawk shell) with all of my gear/tools/water/food for two people it is right at 1800lbs of additional weight, so my total weight is right at the 9200lb rating of the truck. No way you are keeping a Tacoma anywhere near it's GVWR. Before I bought my Chevy, I took a Tacoma home for the night and did a lot of research, there just isnt' enough capacity and I don't exactly take everything/pack heavy.

Nice concept though and I have drooled and debated a flatbed version for a while and will definitely keep this in mind when/if I am ever ready to upgrade.

How much different is the Tacoma compared to the HiLux other than a diesel option? they already share the same front end suspension components, and the same rear diff. Is the HiLux rear frame section fully boxed?

Can the Tacoma handle the same as the HiLux, but on paper it is specced less for the American market? just box the rear of the frame, swap out heavy duty springs and you're good?

I do think the HiLux frame is fully boxed. That being said it would be interesting to see a real world example of the Tacoma FwC, but I dont see how this version would be much different than any other FWC (or Phoenix or similar "light weight" pop-up) on a Tacoma... Also havent people been using Tacos with campers for many years? Have there been a lot of reported issues due to the weight? From what I have read the Tacos with campers still seem to be very reliable and capable.

A flat bed Tundra would be awesome but I have read they have issues with front end strength so may not be great for prolonged off road use?
