Hobietony, what's up?! I want to see that cool topper you made up on top of the ambo-van! That's the fatal flaw with these ambulances is no standing room, and you are the great hope!

Haha, seriously though, i'm excited to see it. I think it'll be great. Life been busy?

Busy indeed - Need to take some time for fun as well. I have the next two weekends to start the process again, then in Mexico the two after that. After THAT, however, I am full bore on Ambovan through the summer into the fall - Goal of October to be fully built and ready to travel. I'll start a new thread when I have something new to post, hopefully after Carcrafter 22's embarrasingly complete project has dropped off the front page. :sombrero:

Tabs on the attachment surfaces so I dont have a vertical weld line on the frame

What is the problem caused by vertical welds? Does it make a brittle spot? Shrinkage/warping?

Dang you do get out to play! Alaska ski trip, mexico, havasu! Are you retired?

From what I read, stress risers in the frame - better to dump the heat in a non-vertical plane. I dont know anything about the science of it, I just know it is 'better'. There is probably some genius metal guy here who can actually explain it.

I am very far from retired, just like to use my vacation time and weekends as best I can. Cuts into my van-building time, though.

By no means an expert or "genius metal guy" but the less you "cut"(and reassemble) the frame vertically by welding, the stronger it remains. Might also round the plates, as any sharp point will introduce a point of stress.

This all assumes the welds are strong and not undercut, which by the pics, I wouldn't worry about.:sombrero:

Any time you weld to a frame, it is ideal to have the shape of the plates, and therefore the welds, be a smooth shape. It also allows for a longer weld, thus spreading the load over a larger area. A "fishmouth" plate should be shaped like ) ( not ><

Awesome build.I was looking into doing some along these same lines, but with a minibus/shuttle bus.Now that I look at the ambulance body a little more,I believe it maybe stronger.

This was a great build thread.

It could really use some good photographs of the rig.

You must have cleaned up you Photobucket albums or something. None of the pictures of your great van are showing. :(

Yup, I renamed and organized my photobucket account and killed all the links - I'll need to revive them in this thread. I do, however, have my own going from where this one ended - http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/63380-AmboVan-Restarted

I've been hitting it hard this summer, current pics are in the attached thread
