"New Technology Rage/Hate/Praise Thread"

I hate electronic parking brakes.

I don't necessarily "hate" the EPB in my F-150 but I still don't understand why it's there.

Most technological advances are made to solve a problem. What problem does the EPB solve?

In 40+ years of automobile ownership I've only ever had one issue with a parking brake, driving through slushy snow that then froze and locked my brake. That happened in 2001 or so on a 1999 Ranger. After that I simply chose to not use the PB when driving in those conditions.

Parking brakes are funny - some people use them and some don't. My wife, for example, NEVER uses the PB. I always do.

I also learned a long time ago that in the auto repair industry there is some kind of rule that you never use a parking brake. Don't know why but every time I pick my vehicle up from being worked on or repaired, it is parked in gear (manual) or park (auto) but the PB is never set. EVER.

You called it a parking brake. Would it’s use be different then if it was called an emergency brake? I’ve always called it an emergency brake.....to be used in the event of a failure of the hydraulic braking system. A cable that can manually apply braking force. I don’t use it most of the time.

LOL. Yeah scan tools and 3rd party software are not consumer level design.

You can lol all you want... You were 100% incorrect and continue to be.

I'm guessing that you have zero experience with Forscan?

Except all the ones that had a TCM module think the vehicle was not in park when it should be and fire off the brake immobilizing the vehicle until the TCM issue or actual shifter switch is replaced requiring a tow back to the dealer. ?

Do tell...exactly what percentage of vehicles have had that problem??????

They certainly are. It's just not buying a wrench and get wrenching. It's buying another tool and get changing things.

Bingo!!!

Dudes ********** about the technology on new vehicles...then they go out of their way to remain ignorant about it. This website has no shortage of guys that refuse to learn something new. If they weren't such pricks about it, I'd feel sorry for them.

I think that's the difference. People who call it an "emergency brake" don't use it when parking.

I spent a lot of time in the Army driving HMMWVs. Those that have driven them know that military HMMWVs do not have a "park" position on the transmission shifter. They go RND21. So you have to park it in N with the parking brake set.

Also when I learned to drive I was taught to always set the parking brake (because that's what it's for.)

My guess is that it makes vehicle assembly faster/cheaper on the line for the OEMs.

Same as you, the only time I don't use a parking brake is when I'm concerned about it freezing up.

Uhhh... Two servos, a relay or two, and switch. I'll take that any day over a cable that rust and stretches...lol.

Completely ignores all the driving flexibility you get with a manual parking but sure, OK.

My point was critiquing the vehicles as delivered by the OEM and that they are not changeable from the user through a normal interface. You were completely acting like its just a menu setting to tick off.

My main personal annoyance derives from fleets of 10-30 vehicles that are not even mine so I am not able to change them even if I wanted to. If I am pulling logs or getting freeze frame data I use the OEM supplied software by each make for the work I do or from a cloud based VDR recording device, however they ask me to do it. Why the hell would I know anything about 3rd party software for a vehicle make I don't even own currently? I also never claimed to know anything about Forscan so...Congrats?

Perhaps you should just start a new thread about how awesome all technology is and how how using 3rd party software makes the original stupid or personally annoying design choices somehow OK and immune from criticism? LOL ;)

There is nothing wrong with changing it. I never argued that. Where do you even get the idea to manufacture these false conflicts? The OEM design is what it is. Changing it makes it not OEM. Its not a tool vs software issue It is not hard to understand. Jnich was criticizing me for even complaining about it in the first place, It's awesome that it is changeable. It doesn't make the original criticism less valid.

You complained about a truck beeping
I said you can turn it off
You claimed that I was wrong
I flat out proved that you were wrong and posted the instructions.

Also, I wasn't criticizing you... Stop playing the victom.

Yet again you dodged my question. Are you scared to admit that you know absolutely nothing about Forscan?

You assumed I meant by any method. I meant only using the vehicle. Which was going to get reset during a key cycle, if a method existed. Either of us could have clarified earlier. For my role in that I apologize. But c'mon dude you misunderstood me as well.
