Out with the old, in with the new...F-150.

I'd prefer a console as well, we don't need the middle front seat and even folded down for an armrest it sits up too high. I know there are guys on the F-150 forum who've put the "flow through" console into a bench seat truck and IIRC the expense was actually not bad, under $400 I think.

However, it requires removal of both front seats so it's basically a multi-hour project. Much as I'd like a center console, I don't see having (or taking) the time to do the swap any time soon.
I don't know. If I had a bench I might. I love the storage space of the console.

The bench seat actually has some pretty good storage. In fact, one point in its favor is that instead of having a single deep bin like some vehicles do, with the bench seat you get two much shallower bins.

In other vehicles I've had with a deep bin, it was constantly a struggle to look for things as they would inevitably fall to the bottom. My '07 4runner had a really deep center console and it was enough of an issue for enough people that some of the folks on the 4runner forum made little nesting trays that would sit in the console so you could find things.

My Suburban also had a deep center console so my solution was to put everything into a heavy cloth bag. If I needed some small item from the console, rather than dig through the console I'd just pull the whole bag out.

With the F-150 bench seat, the "back rest" portion, which folds down to form an arm rest, has a shallow storage console, and the "seat" portion also has one, but neither one of them is more than a couple inches deep, so things don't get lost as easily in there.

I find with the organizer tray it's not bad. And I believe you can get full width trays as well. Or store your items in bins?

Yep, the console bins are so much better. I had a bench seat in my F150. The top bin was fine. But to get to the bottom bin, you’d have to flip the top up. Which mean things got all jumbled up. And couple times, my kids decided to hit the release latch and everything fell out. Unless you need seating for 6, I’d forget the bench seat.

Agreed. I have the buckets w/ console shift in mine and I'd actually prefer a column shift with the console. Just rare to find one.

haha that's funny. Again, Console shifts are everywhere in so cal. Hard to find a truck here with a console that is not console shift. From what I've seen the STX models have console with colum shift and I think that is the best set up by far. The size of the compartment in the console is actually very large.

Y'all like column shifters? Weirdos.
Then I'm a weirdo. If I wanted something sticking up from the floor I'd get a manual tranny. I have other uses for that floor space!

Ummm, no console shifters for automatic transmissions make no sense and waste valuable space. I HATED the console shifter on my 4runner, because on long trips it was always getting in the way of whatever phone or iPod cables, wires, computer plugs, etc, that my wife would bring. Also hated taking my eye off the road to look down when manually shifting (as I often did going up or down long hills while pulling the trailer.)

Once I got my first column shifter I said "that's it, I'm NEVER going back to a floor shifter!" Column shift keeps the seating area clear and keeps all the controls where my eyes are looking.

Floor-shifted automatics are for people who like to pretend they're driving a manual. :p

Speaking of which, I'm pretty sure the current F-150 is the only vehicle on the market that offers either a console or a column shifter.

Ford is definitely the oddball here because every other manufacturer out there has ONE type of automatic transmission shifter with no options.

Chevy/GM are all column shift. I think the newer Nissan Titan and Toyota Tundra have gone to console shifters as well. RAMs have those little hockey puck dials on the console. All compact trucks have console shifters, as do most compact cars with automatic transmissions. My wife's CR-V has a sort of console-type shifter but it's mounted way up on the dash so it doesn't clutter the center console. I think a lot of mini-vans have a similar setup.

Unless it's a manual transmission, I see no point in having driving controls down on the console where they're well below the driver's line of sight. Bad design IMO.

The console shifter can be handy if you regularly use the + - buttons to manually shift (which hardly one ever does these days).
