I found the QT diff guard to cause leaks where the third member bolts on. I think it is due to the QT flexing when hit in the front transfering the energy to the 3rd where the rear mounting points are located.

This happened on my truck and one other on which I have first hand information.

Presumably only on the front?

Hmmm... another with the same issue. QT guards, front leaking, not rear. A little leakage at the pinion, but not enough to equal the amount of oil forward of the pinion.

Also no rust on scratches which are 3-4 years old. See above mentioned leak...

I would say at least 1/4 of rover pinions are leaking at any point in time. More if they see wheeling or water. Not sure it is coorelated.

And you maybe right, but I replaced it with something else and I have not had a leak since.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it! :sombrero:

Seal it up with the Right Stuff and you can take the bolts/nuts off the diff and you'd never have a problem. I've seen people re-seal P38 air bags with that stuff.

I think the pinion leaks are mostly related to the tiny factor breathers getting plugged.

install some large dianeter breathers and all the leaking issues go away.

Well, my faithful little Disco had its first mechanical failure today. The fuel pump died. And not without a little irony, as I was out in the Cinders of Flagstaff doing a photo shoot of recovery equipment.

So, lucky me, I had a nice Extreme Outback Products "Tow Rope" in the truck - bonus!

According to the records I have (this truck was dealer serviced all its life), the pump was last replaced around 26,000 miles ago, but nearly four years. I had avoided buying a spare because of the low mileage since it was replaced and the pending diesel swap. So, now my truck sits in Andrew's garage and I need to order a Land Rover Genuine pump to install on Tuesday.

I did notice that an OEM replacement pump from Delphi is available. Delphi tends to make good stuff - any feedback on that?

You can replace the fuel pump itself with one from a caddy or some such thing. You pull out the assembly and remove the pump and install it in the old assembly. dweb has the cross reference. Me, I paid for a new genuine one and keep it in the truck as a spare at all times (along with pretty much every other failure=dead in the water part--alternator, all the ignition stuff, wheel bearings, brake pads, serp belt, hoses, bulbs, ECU, water pump, fan clutch, wipers, relays, stepper motor, sometimes even CVs, axles and a diff and driveshafts if I am offroading). I do this even though I don't go anywhere interesting or far away. I need to pull the distributor out of my parts motor at somepoint and throw that in there too. It all rides in a nice big plastic box. I picked up this habbit with my series truck. Ironically, it is only when I am without the box (I have two 14CUX rovers so it switches back and forth, although I do have a significant number of dups built up now so I have the bare essentials in both) that I end up breaking down without the necessary spares. I also keep some spare 02s, temp sensor, MAF and TPS as well, but those do not fail in a way that would leave you stranded as you can always unplug them.

edit: if you are not going long term with the motor, call will tillary at roverguy.com and he will send you a used one for not much money.

There is a '94 out at the recyclers...We can get you back running by noon tomorrow. They have the pump priced at 109, but I know some people out there.

Did you happen to check for power at the connector to verify, A) that the fuel pump is actually the culprit or B) that the connector didn't just come loose?

For the just the pump itself, not the whole assembly, Delco EP241 (I put a Delco in mine).
As I recall, the strainer I used is PN TS7.
Unfortunately the Delco's have gone up to around $80-$90 but you can get competitor PN's for less.
If you go with used, due to the pending diesel converstion, I'd consider at least getting a new pump to keep in your spares kit.

26,000 miles?! The Delphi couldn't possibly be any worse that genuine could it? :Wow1:

master/airtex 3270 or 3240 both go in there real easy and can be had at any parts store.

when doing the swap for the first time its easiest to replace the accordian hose from the pump to the top of the hosing with a reinforced 5/16" loop of fuel line. At the same time you will need 2 high pressure fuel injector hose clamps.

when placing the clamp on the pump end of the hose use caution. there are two studs on the top of the pump motor that are live and if the clamp touches them it will cause a short. A short in a nearly empty gas tank is a bad thing.

At the same time you pick up the pump get a new pre-filter sock for the bottom of it.

Also some of the pumps are wired backwards compared to the stock pump so once you have the pump housing reassembled drop it into the tank and plug it in. turn on the ignition switch and make sure it pumps fuel up the feed line if it comes out the return the pump is wired backwards and you will need to replace the leads.

The advantage of using a spare pump is someplaces like napa have a lifetime warranty but the real advantage is you can carry a spare pump very easily and once the conversion is made it takes all of 10 min to swap a pump. The actual pump is smaller then a can of redbull and alot easier to carry then a whole complete factory housing.

I have 2 disco's running Carter pumps. They work great.
I cut some grooves in the nipple. I had the first one I did slip off. You'll see what I mean when you get the pump.
