Dan, that's weak. You broke an axle? In Virginia? How did you survive?

Try this, near Brownrigg Ontario, North Driftwood River Nature Preserve. Google it.

Sometimes **** happens, and you have to deal with it. You can't prevent all possible negative outcomes, no matter how much you try.

That probably started out a big time bummer but I bet it is one of your fondest memories now. I always look back at adverse situations and hardly ever wish it had never happened. I have been in some pretty dire situations over the years while climbing, kayaking and climbing but always learned from them and wouldnt change those experiences for the world.

That's because we tend to learn a lot more from our mistakes, than we do from flawless execution.

Even more than that though were friendships that were formed or strengthened by sharing in hardship. Trips that go off without a hitch are fine but it's the ones where things went wrong that you end up talking about around the fire reminiscing about. Not that I want an epic trip every time, I'm heading out solo this week on a climbing trip and it would be nice for things to go as planned while I'm alone.

This summer the heater line on my truck broke while 60 miles from nowhere on a dirt road in the middle of the Mojave in 120 degree temps causing my truck to start to overheat. My passengers were bummed and a little nervous but I couldnt think of a more scenic place to have a problem. I re-routed the heater hose and we were on our way. These guys still talk about that, it was part of the adventure. Since they were not the adventure type and live a semi sheltered life it will probably be a memory that lasts a lifetime.

Actually, I bent the bumper, and couldn't continue. So we removed the bumper and loaded it into the canoe to bring it back to town so I could order an RTE. Only it was 130lbs, not 120, so the canoe sunk. Damn that extra 10 pounds!

My friends didn't make it. I had to eat them. We are much closer now, though, in a way. :wings:

To add to the bumper confusion in this thread I just picked up a RTE w/new style brushguard, limb riser tabs, SMB, and hilift mounts and its shipped weight on the skid was 195 pounds when I sent out my ARB w/SMB the weight was 185 pounds on the exact same skid. I would rather gain the extra 7 pounds for a better bumper.

I would like to know the actual weights.

I have been working on the bumper some, and have a plan to strengthen the wings. Essentially, run a bracket from the end of the wing to the frame using 2" tube and steel plate. It will be completely bolt-on and use flush mounted hardware. the angle of the reinforcing bracket will help reduce upward and inward movement of the wings and help limit rotation under winching loads. I will also reinforce the frame mounting point slightly with some plate.

I will post some images of the brackets.

I am also working on the parts needed to swap the third members and rebuild the axles (including brakes).

Just need more time in the shop.

I am also reconsidering the diesel swap. Mostly because of my intended use for this vehicle. I would rather spend that energy and cash on whatever my next international truck will be (for South America). The Disco will mostly stay stateside.

However, I am planning a trip to Baja for late November, and will likely take the Disco on that trip. I have an appointment with Mission Santa Maria near Catavina. :costumed-smiley-007
