Overland Journal Project Land Rover Discovery 4 (LR4)

Had the opportunity to watch Scott and the LR4 this last weekend on a local trail. At about the 11 minute mark, Scott took the lead up a moderately loose, steep hill climb. The LR4 performed admirably! All in all I was very impressed with the LR4.

So, silly question and I apologize in advance since the answer is probably readily available. Will the LR3 take a 17" wheel (v8 gas version)? I thought the brakes needed an 18" wheel to clear the calipers etc.

OEM 17's - Weren't sold in the US, but you can get them in Europe or other international markets
will the calipers clear???

see Mack73's response.

By the way does anyone know the load rating for the LR3 wheels, I found a few wheels that fit but I'm unsure about the load rating.

I don't want to drag this more off topic, I'll make a thread about them in a couple days - want to give them a try out on the trail first. But no they won't clear the v8 brakes. You need to convert to v6 brakes.

That was what I remembered from a few other discussions in the past. However, having never personally tried, and not being extremely mechanical, I would not want to pretend to know the asnwer for sure. Thanks Mack73

The LR3/LR4 systems are not compatible from the ABS/ESC/TRAC perspective. The spacers are an appropriate long-term solution. Based on our feedback from LR, the bearings and ball joints are more than capable of taking the additional leverage. Even the Compomotive 18s have a wider offset.

This makes sense. Yes, it's not like the oem wheels were already stretching the limits. They seem pretty conservative so adding 30mm isn't too much. Is that the exact amount? Is it the Terrafirma spacer? You're making me think it wouldn't be so bad to get an LR4.... I would actually be totally fine if a 32-32.5" tire fit ok without too much work. The Duratrac in 32" seems like a sweet spot for size and minor alterations.

I have to seriously ask you one thing though, the tire you chose, sure looks like the Nitto Terra Grappler. That size is only available in what I would call a bad-idea-load-rating of 114S. I say really bad idea considering the plans for use of the vehicle. I would not want to be relying on a tire rated for only ~2600 lbs when there are better tires rated to ~3600 lbs. How about when rocking on 2 tires in a 7000-8000 lb vehicle....worse, in one of those situations where you're truly squashing one tire with most of the vehicle.

Please let us know what you have planned as an appropriate tire choice for this project. I'd hate to see so much work only held up by poor tire choice just to make something fit.

Going back to the wheel/spacer selection for the OJ truck. How close is the wheel to the outer edge of the wheel well/body? From a "throwing rocks and dirt" standpoint. Was 1.25" the minimum?

David,

30mm is about the lower limit, although a 25mm (1") spacer is also available and I suspect it would work with some light grinding to the caliper flashing. 30mm is pretty comfortable spacing, certainly acceptable for sand, dirt, dust and most mud. The truck really does look good with the spacers installed. The tires still fit under the fender flares, at least in the 265mm width.

Would the statement about the LR4 being robust enough to handle the additional stress from the spacers apply to the LR3?

Yes, but the LR3 does not require the spacers for an 18" tire. It would be curious if it allowed for a 17" - imagine an LR3 with 17s and 33s!

Honestly that was what I would like but not at the expense of the brake change. I have an extremely hard time potentially reducing stopping power. I love the brakes on my LR3.
