OzWagon - My HZ75 series Troopie

I'm sorry to hear that - you put a lot of work into the truck to get it fine tuned to your liking. I know I'm speaking to the font of knowledge on the subject of accessibility, but there aren't any options/modifications available to make shifting easier for a BKA?

Wow. That would make it 15 years old when the fellow imported it. I have people that would die to know how to import a 15yr old rig into the US. Would you be able to either post or pm me his contact info and if he does California and Arizona as well? Cheers

Yes it has!

(that's me)

The OzWagon is now residing in Tacoma, WA and will be taking part in many of the Northwest Overland Society events and trips. It made the trip from Phoenix very comfortably, and I don't think I've ever been more excited to own a vehicle.

For now, the build and adventures will continue after I have some engine work done. I had a Toyota diesel specialist take a look at the oil leak (of which I was fully aware during the purchase) and he thinks there's a crack in the HG based on where the oil is coming from. Not the news I was hoping for :(

Either way, the OzWagon hasn't left ExPo. I'm not sure I'll be up to filling the shoes of the PO in this community, but believe me when I say the OzWagon is in good hands, and will see many miles (kilometers, of course) of dirt in the future.

She just rolled over 500k :smiley_drive:

Go west young man...and he did!
Mike was a pleasure to spend time with and I really look forward to any way, shape or form he creates with the rig.

Just a quick update to keep this thread somewhat alive, the OzWagon's oil leak turned out to be a compromised head gasket, or so I thought. I was able to observe a small seep/occasional bubble while running from this area on the rear of the engine, right where the head and block mate. This, as well as the coolant loss I was experiencing, made it obvious that it was time for some work.

Fluid was leaking down onto the top of the transmission, then around the bell housing and all over the bottom of the rig. The accumulated oil/burnt antifreeze made everything look a lot worse than it really was on the bottom, but the OzWagon was leaving bigger puddles everytime it was parked.

Not wanting to take any chances, I had the Troopie towed up to Torfab (http://www.torfab.com) for a head gasket job.

Tor said the engine looked great internally, and the head gasket didn't look compromised. We discussed what this meant, with the possibility of the head being cracked, and what a new head for a 1HZ would cost from Toyota (they have a few in stock in North America, BTW, and they aren't cheap!).

As of this afternoon it has been confirmed that the head isn't cracked, and that I don't need a new one! We're thinking that after 500k km the head bolts might have stretched, and/or the head might have warped a bit, which allowed for the area to be compromised. Either way, the machine shop said they can definitely work with the head as is and I'm hoping to be driving the Troopie again in two weeks or so.

Until then, I'm left looking at the few pictures I took of it on my trip back up from Phoenix and tossing around different interior sleeping platform systems that won't require completely reworking the bucket seat set up. I like em, the lady doesn't, so who knows how that's going to end :)

Glad to hear the head isn't cracked, when I did the injection pump/injectors/timing belt I seriously thought about pulling the head and having it worked over. Now I wish I had.
Can't wait to see it on the trail and looking forward to seeing what you work out for the interior. Always fun watching a rig evolve.

Glad to hear that the head was not cracked. With regular maintenance these engine will last to 1 000 000 Km's. The key is regular engine oil, engine oil filter and fuel filter changes.

For your information 1HZ heads are reasonable easy to find here in Oz. For the other ExPo members with a 1HZ don't go paying too much for one in the US, shout out on the Australia/New Zealand section of the forum under the International ExPo "Chapters section.

Good advise. I'll add that cooling system health is equally important. Check for leaks often and watch your reservoir level. These indirect injected heads have a lot of heat in the pre-cup and it needs to be taken away by the coolant. Rigs which have spent their lives in warm climates tend to be in dire need of a coolant flush. Treating a 70 series to a new rad every twenty years or so will pay off in the long run.

This is the nifty latch we used. I didn't like the one most people have and wanted something easy & different. I really think it will work great as it actually has no load on it, it would take a crazy lateral force to shear the pin and the lock lever makes it secure against accidental opening.

What brand and model is that latch? Looks like just what I had in mind for the swing away I'm building for my Land Rover.

Heck, a head gasket change every 300,000 miles is nothing. . . Wish my Landy would do that! I do have visions of Isuzu diesel power in the future, though!
