The rubicon is not the way to do it FWIW , as you need to cover the whole visible front as far as the slightly over top of wing,(fender) or hood curvature , its done mainly to combat low sun angle reflection , it is of limited use re roof lights , so these need to be mounted far enough back so as to place the hood in shadow , if you want to use for bush driving at night, which is usually a big no no anyhow if at all avoidable . Not trying to preach , just from experience .

Little too much "my way or the highway" in that response IMO. The Rubicon hood decal while it may not be "perfect" it will be better than nothing for sure. It will still eliminate a fair amount of glare and be benificial for the driver.

How on earth is using roof light for bush driving at night a big no-no? Isn't the point of having aux lights to be able to use them at night?

Spray on Plasti-Dip. Costs $6 a can, takes a few minutes to spray, lasts as long as a decal, and peels right off like dead skin.

Sorry not intended to convey that authoritarian impression , by bush driving I mean off highway or track , which is fraught with danger due to terrain even with high level lights set up as I mentioned . Even with aux lighting on bush roads the risk from animals moving at night is increased , just from my experience and results I have seen . repeat not trying to preach just a bit of hopefully helpful advice . :smiley_drive:

FWIW, flat finishes will not last or wear as well as a gloss one. If you want it flat, it may be better to get a wrap instead.

FACT: Urethane three (3) component w/third (3rd) component as the flatten er will outlast all other coatings period!

IMHO; all flat black is better.................1999 k2500 Burb 012.jpg

Plasti Dip is good and comes off, also if you want FLAT black, the Krylon Cammo Ultra Flat has an insane low albedo number, I have some photography/astronomy friends that use it specifically to paint the insides of modded telescopes and camera hoods.

FYI, Plasti-dip can be painted. If you don't want it the straight up black out of the can you can paint it after its applied and still have it peel off.

Mine is bedlined black (need to put vents in I think) because I got a replacement and wasnt going to spend the money to get the paint matched.

Box Rocket, have you painted over Plasti Dip? I was curious about that, haven't seen any information on the interwebs and I saw one video on Youtube that looked kind of promising, but didn't show long term effects of the spray paint over the Dip. I might have to experiment with some different techniques.

I tried out plastidipping for the first time this weekend on my hood. Thought it was a good test before bed liner that cant be removed. I think it turned out good. (the red decal has been there for a long time)

Two points...

First, it's not just for those who have overhead lights. On my 1990 Montero I got so tired of being blinded by the sunlight reflecting off the hood that I just rattle-canned it black:

Second point, the Monty was also the last vehicle I felt needed this treatment, but it needed it badly. Especially near the Spring or Autumn equinox the glare off the hood would be so bad it was very difficult to see - which is both fatiguing and dangerous.

Seems to me the flat hood of the Monty is what made the sun glare so bad. The 4x4's I've owned since (2004 Tacoma, 1999 4runner and my current 2007 4runner) don't have this problem, nor does the wife's YJ. IMO the vehicles that need this treatment are vehicles with large, very flat hoods. Most vehicles nowadays have enough curve in the hood that it's not a problem, so in that case it may be just to make the vehicle look "salty." ;)

Unless you have a 2nd gen tacoma sport with the hood scoop. That hood scoop is flat out dangerous the way it reflects the sun RIGHT in your eyes. haha

Yeah its definitely not because of overhead lights. Its sunlight. We have a bus plant here in town and all buses getting shipped to Alaska get the flat black hood.

This is my understanding from my friend's dad who paints cars for a living (specializes in the classic BMW community I.e. concours cars). He said they wear out faster (than gloss paints) with each washing. Perhaps you're talking a new paint formulation that he's unaware of?

I find that this paint stops all reflected glare and is an effective night camo.......
