Phil's Adventure Tacoma

On Christmas Day my brother in law came up for the day and along with him came a new pulley. 5 mins later we were done.

Here is the offender

Now that it has been replaced, I had forgotten how quiet the new Tacoma's are.

Thankfully, my brother in law took care of all the expenses with the pump and pulley, so that was a big help to us. It only cost Jenn and I time, gas, and stress from dealing with NYC. It also turns out I don't have the extended warranty on the truck. I had it on the 05 Tacoma I had for about a week. No harm, no foul.

Since August I have been trying to finish the platform, but due to time constraints and weather its been a battle. I have a truck full of stuff to mount, so I slowly began attaching stuff.

Here is what I have gotten done so far. It's nothing exciting.

I decided to move my axe and shovel to the lid of my tool box.

Step one involved drilling simple holes.

Next up I took a small hole saw and drilled through the bottom layer of metal under the lid. Just large enough to get a nut onto a bolt.

Living in wet climates I tend to go over kill with sealing up the truck. I first partially filled the hole with RTV.

From here I bolted the pieces down, letting the RTV fill in around the bolt. Once the RTV was dry, I filled the entire hole with foam.

Once that was dry and cut down I finished it off with a layer of RTV to help smooth it out and make sure the area is flush with the metal.

After the RTV was dry and cleaned up, I just placed some stickers over the areas to hide the plugged holes.

Here it is.

Hopefully, by the end of the week I can get the platform finished.

We went out for a nice snow run. It was pretty fun with several recoveries along the way. Nothing major and most took all of 5 mins to deal with. Ice turned out to be our biggest foe of the day.

Then this one happened. Took us a while to deal with it do to where the truck was, but we managed. The ice created a road block.

At some point my spring snapped. Looks like I will be dipping into my tire, locker, and gearing fund:( Now I just need to figure out what I want to do.

Sorry to see your coilover gave up the ghost. When do you think it happened? Check around the broken spring to see if the metal is shinny or rusted, my bet is there was a previous crack which will show up as rust.

Wow, looks like fun!

Sorry about your coilover, hope you get it solved and solved cheaply. Keep us posted on what they say.

What the heck!!? Sorry to see that, How have those coils held up otherwise? Has the finish been compromised in places?

No clue when it happened.

A little wash down and the coils shined and there were no signs of rust as far as I knew. Tomorrow I will get under there and fully inspect them.

I'm not really that annoyed that they broke. I'm frustrated since this eats into my tire money.

After looking at the pic you posted a little closer, it looks like the spring has been cracker or broken for a bit. It clearly has rust on the broken end of the coil. That rust didn't form on the drive home.

Yes, I noticed that too. I'm thinking water worked its way under the top coating, which caused it to rust from the inside out.

That said, I am not fully understanding what has happened here. It looks to me that the spring slipped off the base and is not actually broken.

From the looks of that pic, it appears as though the donut shape on the bottom is the bottom ring of the coil and the piece to the right is snapped off from it. Can't tell for sure without seeing from the other side.

Good luck with it. Looks like a fun day anyway. :ylsmoke:

Oh yes, I see it now. That looks like the problem. Crap!

I guess the good news is that as long as the shock is still okay, all I would need to do is replace the spring.
