pop up camper advise pls

I've owned a 2000 8' Northstar popup from new and it's been flawless. I've driven it thirty-three times to Baja over the years but only on basic Baja service roads. It's nice pulling up to a site anywhere, leveling the truck out and five minutes later you're done. I have had to upgrade the suspension substantially to accomodate the camper as the stock Dodge suspension can't begin to handle the weight. Don't even know it's on there now though.

Northstars are nice but my FWC didn't require any suspension upgrades on my Dodge.

A bigfoot? Doesn't that thing weigh like over 5000 pounds? A land yacht for sure. Good luck with that offroad.

2600 dry. That's without the genny, AC, water, or beer, and it adds up, but relatively light for its size. Figured if that couple could travel S. AM. with a 3000 series Bigfoot, and have zero issues with the camper itself, my 2500 should handle Baja if I don't try and do something stupid. With the dually, didn't even notice in on back with the exception of even worse mileage and a better ride. The pop up we were planning on having built wasn't that much lighter once the goodies were added up. Going to take it to some scales locally to get an accurate dry weight with all the features. I'm guessing it will be a bit more than 3k, but not sure just how much more.

I noticed the Torklift FS. I'm curious what the Baja approved method or device is that replaces it.

The same as there is no better. Here's the deal, and it kinda bites, but not completely. Bought the new Torklift stuff. Got raked on the install, but had to go that route due to time constraints ($1150 including a 7-way plug in the bed). Later, thought about trying to copy the Superhitch design as I need to use an extension if going to be hauling our boat/bikes/buggy with the camper on. Thought about it some more and decided if my yet-built modified version breaks off and sends my boat through a crowded school bus, well, it wouldn't be good. So, decided to just buy a Superhitch (knowing that I would need to replace the rear Torklift brackets as the ones that work on the factory hitch don't work on the Superhitch. Sometimes you get lucky and only 90 miles away a guy was selling a used Superhitch and extension for a Chev dually, with the Torklift brackets (all of them). So, used being as good as new, I'll just use the used stuff and sell my near new stuff in hopes of recovering some modicum of the week-old purchase price. Its frame mounted, so the tie down mounts on the camper will fail before the Torklift stuff does. I did buy the Fast Guns as I need to load/off-load quickly. If I was just going to leave the camper on full time (or near full time), then I would just use the basic tie downs that I bought for a fraction of the cost of the Fast Guns.

I know this may be getting away from the thread. So PM me if you think necessary (or start a thread under full size and other). But what mods did you make to your Dodge? I've already added air bags and the BD steering brace.
Thanks

Dave I know you weren't asking me that, but I do know the answer how to best modify a Dodge question. Its actually not hard at all to do. First raise the hood on the Dodge. Remove the radiator cap. Back the Dodge out from under the radiator cap. Drive a Chevy under the radiator cap. Install the radiator cap. Modification complete :wings:

Okay, okay, I was joking Dodge folks. No need to get upset.

They do have some nice new offerings. Btw, I wasn't saying I have a great suspension, just that it can handle the weight of the fwc without mods. I'd love to upgrade it for better performance offroad if I ever win the lottery.

No problem! As we're backing up from under our radiator cap we'll pull you out from high centering with that low slung frame, then meet up in your Bigfoot for beers.:sombrero: That's going to be one comfortable rig you're putting together!

Why that's an advertisement for a used camper using a popular free online service.

Actually, looks like a stout little camper. One could have some fun modifying that little bugg'r.

_________Really?_____________

Just curious what it might be, never seen anything like it, called the advertiser and he says nothing on it either..........? May have to drive up and check it out.

The shape kinda looks like a Cullen, but they don't currently make them using that fab process (at least it doesn't appear that way from their website). Its really pretty cool. Looks like it borrows from a Leer topper in some respects.
