Porterfield R4-S -- Opinions?

I'm looking to upgrade my rotors, and have been suggested the R4-S pads to go along with them. Is anyone running these pads, and if you are, what do you think of them? How's their cold performance?

They're for a 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited that's quite a bit heavier than stock. :)

Thanks!

I know that's a popular pad with trackday people, but I don't know how it would work on a truck.

If you can get Hawk Black or HPS pads, those are likely another solid choice.

Here's what the company posts on its website:

"R4-S High Performance Street and Autocross

For high performance and heavy-duty street conditions. Perfect for prolonged everyday street use while also being capable of tolerating the most severe street use without any fade. Rotor friendly of course. The R4-S friction level will give you an impressive increase in stopping ability with very minimum pedal effort. R4-S compound has the absolute lowest noise and dust levels, far below OEM equipment or any other high performance brake material. Good for autocrossing, some drivers' schools, and rallies. The R4-S compound is available for virtually any vehicle sold in the US. We also offer the R4-S in pad sizes for competition type calipers that are used under street driven conditions."

If you intend to autocross your Jeep, they might be a good choice. I find that casual off road driving is far from aggressive street driving, and you won't get them warmed up to the point they start to really work for you. Throw in water or mud, and you are out of the realm for which the pads were designed. If you drive in dirt or sand a lot, the extra abrasion will wear any pad quickly, including expensive pads. If you are satisfied with the stopping power of your stock pads, why change them? I use NAPA pads on my Jeep, even when raced in the desert, and they always work fine, stand up to water and mud, and don't cost a fortune to replace. If you want to try the R4-S pads, let us know how they work off road.
