Started out as a completly underexposed test shot in manual mode on the Rebel. Note: It takes me approximately 1000 test shots to figure out the correct manual settings since I forget them every time I turn the camera off. Stupid old brain.

It looked pitch black on the display and when uploaded on the computer. Out of curiosity I opened the image up in Photoshop - grayscaled it, tweaked the light levels, and contrast adjustments. Second note: I have no idea how to use Photoshop correctly.

In the end it's a grainy black and white that I really like. Guess that's all that matters... :)

Featuring the custom hand made jewelry. Same guy made all the jewelry that she wore. Amazing stuff.

I'll throw a couple of the kids up here for you all to critique. Be gently but firm, I'm fumbling through this Photography thing.

She's a beautiful princess! (and handsome princes too! :)) Lovely pictures.

I am intimidated by portraiture as well. Finally cracking open a couple of books on people picture taking, and trying to learn from the excellent photogs on here as well. It's not easy- and stretches a different part of the noggin for sure. Good fun tho.
I want to stick to natural light for now, just the basics; and coming from landscape images, I'd like to learn how capture interesting light, including deep shadows and flares of brilliance in the most ordinary locations- would appreciate any suggestions on books or links on natural light portraiture.

Took these with a GF1, smaller size seems less obtrusive with my kids..

Joash, portraiture, while different in it's approach, isn't all that different from any other form of photography when it comes to execution. Just as the sun lights a landscape, you light your subject in very much the same way, and everything else boils down to design elements, principles, and if you're lucky, a special moment.

For instance, these first two shots were taken around the same time in pretty much the same place. Basically I'll I did was turn 180 degrees facing north for one shot then south for the next with the sun coming from the east. See how I used the warm soft side light in exactly the same way.

If the light is difficult, use it to your advantage, play with your exposure and allow it to give form to your subjects. Then you just compose accordingly and wait for a moment or look.

If it's bright outside, shoot in the shade, just be mindful to watch the subtleties of light in the shade. Ask yourself what's it doing, and where is it coming from. Then again, just compose accordingly, wait for something to happen, then shoot.

Great advice as always Trevor. Those two shots in particular beautifully exemplify that loaded little statement of yours below, and what (I think) I find most appealing about exploring this area some more.
We'll see, I'm off to north india at the end of the month- hectic schedule, but I want to squeeze some people shots in if I can.

:) It's actually not all that glamorous, just a short 2 week trip chock full of emotionally and physically draining medical work. It hits me hard every year, but rural India will do that to even the most hardy…....has its own rewards though.
And def. no shortage of PEOPLE, and this thread has goaded me into taking along more than just a disposable camera this time. It'll be therapy. :victory:

A couple of my kids taken on my iPhone of all things. Seem to be better able to capture a candid moment on the phone rather than pointing a camera at them
