Poser beach pics

These are totally poser pics, but my wife and I went to the Oregon Coast yesterday and the weather and sunset was pretty amazing for February.

The pics are on the 15 mile long beach between Gearhart and Astoria that people are allowed to drive on. The shipwreck is the Peter Iredale, which looking worse for the wear. I remember see much more of it as a kid. Although storms have reexposed lower portions of it that haven’t be visible for years.

Note the LC100 in the background of the one picture. I wanted to talk to them, but didn’t get a chance. It looked stock but almost the same color as mine. I also saw a pair of FJ Cruisers that were enjoying a fire on the beach, but they scooted out before I could stop and chat.

Nice pics...good eye...what camera were you using?

I was also wondering if you can camp there...didn't know there was a stretch in Oregon that you can drive on.

Thanks all for the kind words.

Vince,

The camera is a Pentax K100D with the stock 18-55mm lens. I'm more of a point and shoot kind of guy, except for certain photos or when I have the time to change settings, which is not often.

Yes, the beach is drivable from Gearhart all the way to Astoria most times of the years. The most northern 4 miles from about the wreck of the Peter Iredale north to the Columbia Jetty is closed during certain times of the year and day, I think because of the heavy foot traffic visiting the wreck.

As far as camping, I don't believe it's technically legal, but people build fires out there all the time and stay out all night long. As long as there isn't a tent set up, or anyone looks like they're making it their home for a few days, I doubt anyone gets hassled. The beach is patrolled regularly by Clatsop County Sheriff and Gearhart police mostly for speeders. Speed limit is 25 mph. No flags needed. It's a good idea to watch for high tide. At high tide, some parts of the beach become really narrow and might require driving in pretty soft sand. The dunes are off limits, but are almost impossible to get to anyway, because you'd have to get up and over a bluff.

I noticed that Gearhart Fire Department has a brand new Unimog firetruck. I assume for use on the beach or dunes for brush fires. I've only seen it outside once and everytime since it's been in the firehouse. I'd like to get a picture of it. It's coolest looking thing ever.

I believe you can also drive north of there, in Washington on Long Beach and there's a few places south along the Oregon Coast that you can drive on, but not many and no where near as long. If you like sand, don't forget the dunes at Sand Lake, Florence, Winchester Bay and I think Coos Bay, all along the southern Oregon Coast. These are major OHV dunes and get lots of use.

I go to Winchester Bay all the time as my parents in law live in Reedsport, but I've never had the chance to drive on the dunes out there. Flags and OHV stickers are required on the dunes.

Is it an old 404 or whatever??? I used to run a MOG brush rig for a crew out of Portland that went under. Vince was selling off the rigs (I really wanted to buy one but it just wasn't feasable) and I wonder if that's one of them. I know A guy in Sandy bought at least one of them, but I don't know where the others went.

Cheers

No, this looked liked a brand spanking new Unimog with the new body style. Kind of like this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Unimog_U400.jpg

It was painted bright green but I can't remember what kind of apparatis it had on the back. I've only see it once as I drove buy the station and they were washing it and once from a distance when it was blocking traffic for some kind of funeral precession. The other couple times, it's been behind the closed doors of the fire house. I only make out there a few times a year.

I'm guessing they got some sort of grant to buy it and it's a brand new rig. I would love to see it up close and especially in action. I can't find too many photos of newer Unimog fire trucks online, so I wonder if it's a pretty rare rig.
