.

I'm not sure how much track work you have done, but I can assure you every grouser made for Kässborher , Prinoth, Bombardier, LMC, or Thiokol is square on the belt mating surface. There may be some softening/rounding of edges in the tire guides, but that's it.

I work for a company that builds belt, chain and screw conveyors for over 100 years. I have yet to see any chain or chain/belt combination use a square to mesh with a drive sprocket.

Softening of the edges in this case will more than likely lead to high wear of the surfaces that mesh. Either the plastic sprocket will wear away or the thin wall tube will no longer be tube.

I am pretty sure these snowcats you speak of have drive shoes along the inside portion of the track to mesh with the sprocket.

Good luck.

Wow that's a long time to hold a job! You must have started when you were really young. ;)

Why don't you just believe the guys that worked with snowcats a lot?

Here's a picture of a Thiokol 601 grouser:

I could show you a lot more pictures if i'd search, but i spend my time more likely in the shop than bitching around here...

Yea, I'd rather be bitching in the Shop than on the Internet myself... :D

Seriously, Nice work there, I've been watching with interest.

They do have tire guides, which is along the lines of what you are getting at. The shape / profile of these differs from brand to brand, but most are fairly square. If they were rounded, the cat would ride horribly when the tires roll over (tracks roll under) them. If I have time, I'll whip up to the shop and see what is around to take a pic of. Most cats are in the alpine or backcountry right now.

Steiner, are you planning on using this contraption year round, or mainly in the winter? I am glad you said you were going to add some leaves to your suspension. In the one video it looked quite soft and squishy:). I don't recall, are the tires foam filled or pneumatic?

It is really looking good! I must admit, when I read the first page or so, I had my doubts. Mostly regarding the tires cut into tracks. The set up you are using now should work well. Can't wait to see the test drive videos!

I`m going to use it all year around. In the summer mostly at offroad events, but also for forest work. In the winter to groom the trail to our house and to get supplies there...

The tires are pneumatic, i`m going to see how they hold up...

Started with the rear suspension today. Wasn`t easy to jack it up:

Those tracks will never come off for sure:

The start of the new spring mount:

Well the measurement was way off, i had to make it again...

The finished new mount. I also got rid off the all-threads:

Not sure how it looks like it`s leaning to one side, but it sit`s nice and level:

The next problem to take care of:

Not sure how i`m going to fix this without building new track assemblies...

larger diameter wheels? or weld an "axle" mount to the bottom of the main tubing . looks like you are well on your way. it is great to see a project like this actually get built!

Would be too easy. I can just lower the two front wheels. I can`t lower the rear one because then the tire guides will hit the spring mount. So if i lower just the two front ones it wouldn`t sit level...

'Hey Steinez, why not just cut the track guides so that they dont hit the track wheel guides? You could use your `flex´and be done with it in no-time!:)

You could cut the tire guides so they just come up to the wheel. I know that is a lot of work, but seems the simplest option... Kind of what was said by Chilli in non-tracked vehicle speak:)

You beat me to the post reply key... Why "ghetto fab" to make the tire guides the correct height?

Because the tire guides are the correct length. It`s the track assembly that`s wrong because it was designed for another track system. So i`m going to redo both track assemblies, just not yet, because i`m sure i`ll find something else to change later on and don`t want to build them three times...

Well Steinez, you certainly told me enough about `Flex´, so no problems there..... Just glad we can communicate.:ylsmoke: Remember, use your flex.:Wow1:
