This is the best one I have with the mirror caps. I pulled them off to paint and used a can of primer/color/clear for each one.

How much lift do you have and how tall are your tires? I was thinking of going a little nigher with mine, pretty much envisioned where yours is at.

Ok, thank you. I think I'm a little less than 2" in the front any my tires are close to that diameter. Looks like I need to go up a bit more :)

Just figured out why the drivers side fender was replaced. Lower ball joint failed. Drivers side was almost new, passenger side had some play in it. Glad I swapped them out before the upcoming trip

I replace mine every 2 years (15,000 miles) just for peace of mind because I drive my truck hard and always in remote places

^ That's completely unnecessary, if the other joint doesn't have play. If you're paying a shop to do the repair, why would you pay twice the labour and parts just because? They don't see even wear and don't typically wear out at the same time. This is why you do pre-trip checks and find them before you go on a trip. A failing balljoint is more than noticable before it becomes a safety issue in daily driving situations.

Replacing them every 15K miles is just insane, but if it helps you travel with peace of mind, I guess...

If it failed to the point of separation the PO was negligent, not lazy. Good catch before your trip though.

I see what you are getting at Pete, but I don't think it is completely unnecessary. They may not technically see the same wear but they see similar wear. As you pointed out balljoints are wear items and should be checked frequently and maintained as such. They don't last forever!
Replacement cost really isnt a huge factor for everybody, since many others like myself do most of their own maintenance and it's not much more of an inconvenience to swap another ball joint because the tools are out, the truck is on jack stands, and I'm on a roll!

I don't plan on doing mine that frequently. If they need it I will replace them or at 100k. I know these ball joints were replaced via recall at 22k so with the truck pushing 165k it was time either way. Even recalled replacements can still fail.

Regarding the lower ball joints specifically on these trucks, I will be replacing mine every 50,000 kms or every 3-4 years. These are basically the most known failure point on the early Tacomas and 3rd gen 4Runners to which share the design with the Tundra LBJs. Considering the Tundra is heavier and we are running 35s (more weight on each corner) I personally wouldn't trust the "factory" intervals for these joints. Sure you can check them and see when they are wearing, but when these fail, they often snap on the ball joint stud or at the 4 mounting bolts where there would have been no preventative detection. My $0.02

Yep. The ones on my 3rd Gen were showing play at 50,000km and I'll be using this interval going forward. '

I have replaced tons of LBJ when I was a tech and we never replace or seen the 4 bolts snap. You guys must be shooting those things on way to tight.

Since my truck isn't a DD and sees less than 7k miles a year if that. I'll probably replace mine every 6 years or so. It's an easy replacement to not have to worry when on a trip.

They dont all snap, typically 2 will fall out and bend and snap the others. Either way the result is the same.

Torque to spec and use threadlocker and you are fine.

I had the same happen years ago after my truck was in an accident and Toyota did the work. Two fell out and one snapped as I got off the highway. I use red loctite and torque to 60 ft lbs every single time and tell people it's not acceptable to do it any other way.
