Question on TreadWright

Thought I'd chime in.

A few weeks ago I bought 4 31" Guard Dog tires from Treadwright. That's the old MTR tread design.
For a starving grad student like me, I just couldn't drop $700 on brand new tires, but $400 is manageable.

They're on BFG All Terrain carcasses, and got to my apartment just a couple days after I ordered them. Each one only took an ounce or two to balance, and so far they've performed great. There's a hum that is to be expected from a pseudo-mud tire, but they ride very well, and feel no different than a new tire does.

Most of my off roading is typical expo stuff--moderate trails, etc--and for this application I think they'll perform brilliantly.

I have two sets.. A set of 285/75 R 16 in the Wardens (the BFG AT patterned ones), and a set of 285 75 R 17 in the Guard Dogs (Goodyear MTR patterned ones) and so far they are both awesome. Contrary to what I'd read here both sets balanced easily and very well. The tire shop guys couldn't even tell they were retreads until one of the more perceptive ones noticed that the MTR patterned ones read "BF Goodrich Mud Terrain KM2."

I am highly impressed, they also seem to be holding up great...

For now it looks like I would buy them again and again and I am hard on tires/lots of issues with tire chunking in the past. Also lots of the local guys are running them and aren't reporting the quicker wear issues I've heard about as well but we'll see I suppose.

As I have more time on them I'll definitely post more info and photos especially about how they are holding up. I also definitely dig the recycled aspect and it seems like the casings they choose and use are also top of the line. There will be a set of the Guard Dogs (MTR pattern) my Toyota pickup with the Mercedes diesel at Overland Expo if anyone wants to check them out...

I also have the Goodyear MTR lookalikes, in 245/75r16 and LOVE em!!! Theyve got about 15000 miles on them now and from what I can tell theyre wearing better than my old BFG MT's ever did!! Balanced out no problem, havent had any problems with chunking or them going out of balance.

I would DEFINATLEY buy another set of these!!!

Looks like my pics have disappeared...

Well an update...

These tires are still running strong and have had NO problems...

My wife's Nissan Xterra gets a LOT more mileage driven on them than my Jeep. Just drove the Xterra from Cape Cod MA to south of Norfolk VA with NO problems... the hum helps put the driver to sleep... to bad my wife kept waking me up!!! Well at lease I got to sleep for about 30 min of the 12 hour drive :bike_rider::bike_rider:

I'm looking forward to getting bigger ones for my Jeep... (going metric and same size as Xterra)

Here are some pics of the Xterra and the 285/75's...

I've been using re-treads for my 18 wheelers for a long time. Retreads perform just as well as virgin tires, IMO. Diamond in the rough indeed. I'm not sure why it took so long for retreads to catch on for passenger vehicles over here.

I realize this is not a new thing, according to my dad they were all the rage way back when and they just kind of fell off the radar.

Falling off the radar aside, I think alot of it has to do with retreads having a horrible reputation. Too many people dont know the difference between reTREADS and reCAPS. You should see the arguments about them on TTORA.

According to the people over there, anyone who runs retreads are just unsafe fools who are accidents waiting to happen. After 15000 miles of driving on retreads that I like a whole lot better than my old BFG MT's, Im sold...

Got my 5 Wardens in 285/75 yesterday. There was a bit of an isuue In balancing but once done they seemed fine for the 12 miles they have so far. Today will be a better test. Sure hope they work out - can't beat the price!

Andre,

I definitely want to see these. I'm very interested in this tire. I was hoping to get to see the LC.

I might have the one dissenting view on Treadwrights: http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/405093-our-new-land-cruiser-saved-our-lives.html

And yes, I was the one that bought Schattenjager's rig.

Wow, terrible story, bro. Hate to hear about your ride, but very thankful that you and the family are safe.

Your story gives me pause regarding my own set of retreads, which so far, I have loved and lauded. I will consider your experience next time I feel like going a little bit faster on the interstate, and definitely before I buy another set of TWs. Thank you for sharing.

Now if you'll excuse me, I gotta go hug my kid.

This happens with any and every tire manufacture. I have seen in with just about everyone this year.

There are several factors that could have caused it.

I look over my tires every week but I am in the tire business and drive 1k miles a week.
