Thought I'd chime in.
A few weeks ago I bought 4 31" Guard Dog tires from Treadwright. That's the old MTR tread design.
For a starving grad student like me, I just couldn't drop $700 on brand new tires, but $400 is manageable.
They're on BFG All Terrain carcasses, and got to my apartment just a couple days after I ordered them. Each one only took an ounce or two to balance, and so far they've performed great. There's a hum that is to be expected from a pseudo-mud tire, but they ride very well, and feel no different than a new tire does.
Most of my off roading is typical expo stuff--moderate trails, etc--and for this application I think they'll perform brilliantly.
