Rango.....1942 Willys MB

VanIsle_Greg

I think I need a bigger truck!
Looks pretty amazing to me my man. It is 100% better looking than the stock and hacked exhaust on my XJ does?

I love your work, very well planned out and precise. I think this is my new fav build thread...

Love the post and hair pin arrangement for your rubber isolators... everything I build may use that idea going forward.

It was a productive day!

The tubs back on the chassis, Hopefully the last time for at least a while! The chassis went on well. It's got that 70 years of patina thing going on!

I did end up adding a 'dimple' to the passenger side exhaust. I just think the front driveshaft would have been too close under compression travel. The dimple gave me another inch or two of compression before the driveshaft should become an issue.

I also welded up the transmission tunnel. I still have a little work to do on it. I need to make a removeable panel on the passenger side to make getting at the front output and driveshaft yoke easier. I still need to figure out something for a removable top panel for the shifters......

Here is where the fuel sump drops down from the tank. That ended up working REALLY nice I think. I will be running a 90 degree fitting on the bottom to point the line in the right direction. The exhaust ended up being out of the way enough also. Kicking the muffler and kick over the axle to the side a little bit really helped! It does look like I missed a few spots spraying the frame.....need some more rattle can lovin.....

I also started welding up the firewall in the brake and clutch pedal area. That was not fun. The metal was SOOOOO dirty I just couldn't get decent welds. I will attack it with a flap disc and clean it up some.....

More soon....

As always killer build and documentation. :sombrero: I would really consider some type of heat shield on your exhaust near the sump and fuel lines. Boiling fuel is never a good idea!

Next time I'm in town I would love to check the MB out....

Tele,

Your more than welcome to come check it out. I will probably be driving it most of the summer too!

On the fuel sump. I tried to pull the exhaust as far away as I could. It looks a little closer in the pictures. Anyways. I do have a novel design in my head for a heat shield for the sump. Let me get it running around again and then I will add in some more of the little stuff.

Thanks!

I don't think we get too many old school build your own frame and everything else from scratch builds on Expo, so I think it was good to share it.....

It's something completely against the main stream of the sport right now. While I appreciate the modern luxury and refinement of something like a 4 door JK with lots of cool bolt on goodies, that's just not my speed lately. Having quite literary designed and built this vehicle from the ground up it gives me a whole new appreciation and understanding of the inner workings of the vehicle. Also, it is just so simple overall. I tried to use parts that where common, cheap, easy to find, and easy to replace with basic hand tools.

It started as something 70 years old and I really don't think I changed the spirit of the original vehicle that much. I am going for that crazy 1940s concept vehicle thing.....

Today went pretty decent.....

I built a few of these to hang the rear section of the exhaust....

100_0912.jpg

I needed two rubber mounts to hold the rear section of the exhaust from the V-band clamp backwards....

100_0910.jpg

I also made a hard mount off the transmission near the merge pipe to keep the forward part of the exhaust from moving it around since the pipes are so close to everything. I don't know how much I like it, but it sure works!

Since the exhaust was all done I pulled everything and welded up the entire exhaust and sprayed it with some flat black BBQ paint....

Tomorrow it goes back together and the tub goes back on!

I have been trying to figure out how I am going to do my exhaust, seeing how you did your hangers gave me a great idea on how to do the ones on my CJ7

No too much to report just yet.....

I did get this started.

The master cylinder is from a 1975 Chevy Monza, it's a small bore MANUAL brake master cylinder. It should be just about the right size for my smaller sidekick/tracker calipers.

As you can see, I don't have a lot of extra room! I'm glad the master cylinder has fitting on the outside!

I did discover some issues with my front driveline, specifically the extra small u-joint at the t-case. I am trying to come up with a possible solution.

What is up with the little u-joint?

Since I am running a homemade super short SM420 to D18 adapter ( only 1/2" thick ) there isn't room for a larger joint. Looking back on it now, I should have either changed to a 'normal' 4-5" long adapter and a normal 1310 u-joint......or changed to a D18 with the 1" thick long adapter. Oh well, too late now.....at least for EJS and my moab trip.

So, I am going to make a 2pc front driveline I think....

I need to make this a little quick. My laptop power supply just decided to die....GREAT!

Anyways.....yesterday....

Finished plumbing the brake system to the master cylinder....

100_0934.jpg

Test fit the new tunnel after welding....

Tonight.....

100_0942.jpg

Figured out my issue with the clutch master cylinder. I basically need to make an AN-3 to AN-4 adapter. I have one that is close coming from Earls and will mod it to fit.....

100_0944.jpg

Chopped off the old D20 output shaft after annealing it at work during lunch

100_0947.jpg

Attached the steering box with the correct hardware. Thanks Fastenal!

100_0950.jpg

Started making the steering column mounts on the floor and dash. I can't decide if I want t weld on the new plate to the floor....or just bolt it in.

100_0948.jpg

I'm making pinch bolt mounts for the steering column.....Fun.

I'n'it were me I'd bolt the steering mount to the floor for now... revisit after your event and possibly weld in an entirely new floor.

Metcalf

Expedition Leader
Yeah, not going to weld in a new floor....I would probably buy a new tub before that. This thing isn't suppose to be perfect, just functional.
