Requiem for a V8

To be fair, lotsa naysayers here would have no problem dumping $100k (if they had it) on an ECR 110. The prices Defenders command in the states is the biggest ripoff out there -- where are the 5 pages of "what a ripoff!" posts whenever someone lists a rusty '94 D90 with 140k mi for $22,000?
I might buy a $100k ECR Defender if I had Bill Gates' money, but probably not even then. I'd rather build my own.
But in any case, there's a difference between paying market rate for something (even if that market rate is insane), and paying way over market rate for the same thing.

That said, I'm not being hard on him, just trying to figure out what the point of the original post was.

Don't be so hard on the guy, sheesh. This isn't Dweb.

Fuzz, there's a BIG difference between dropping the coin to buy a unique D110 (even an ECR110) and even a D90, vs paying $13k to do a 4.0 engine swap an every day, easy to find, DII. Also, even $13k for a 3.9 engine swap in a 110 or 90 is still too much. Diesel would be in the ball park.

Think of all the extras he could have bought with that cash.... bumpers, sliders, suspension, roof rack, winch, lockers, rooftop tent, a trailer... or even a nicer 04 D2...

I really hope he didn't pay over $10k.... that just hurts....

Holy ****¢|<¡Ng $h¡+ Batman for that price the dealership would have saved you money. I think you just bought that mechanic the 5.0 he needed to get his Shelby kit car completed. You have done it in your drive way and just pissed off the neighbors for a week and saved about $7,000.00 that's if you don't know the difference between a crows foot & monkey wrench. Maybe subtract a $1,000 for a really good set of tools. I Almost feel sorry for you, but we told you before hand.

It's a remanufactured rover engine with top hat liners that Atlantic British is reselling.

It looks like this:

looks very nice , hows it coming along? so with this new style motor the problem is gone? if so hows that stupid land rover engineers didn't do the same by sending land rover reputation down the drain

i think in between all after 1999 rover motors the best is the ford engine on the latest land rovers. em i right? its a basically modified f150 motor. em i right? correct me plz if not

I thought they had BMW or Jaguar engines, I hope youre not thinking about the rover 4.6 and the ford 4.6

after 2005 or 2006 they all have ford motor and trans, that's what ppl say and jaguars later years when they became actually much less junk is due to practical ford parts including motor and transmission . stay away from European engineering if u want to have a reliable car lol its a fact

Actually, the later Land Rovers and Jaguars use British/German designed engines based on the AJ-V8, which was designed in house at Aston Martin/Jaguar before Ford took over in 1998. Ford then used this design for the 4.0 V8 in the Lincoln series. Aston Martin also uses a much tweaked version of this motor. My own Jaguar XJ8 has this engine coupled to a ZF 5HP24. This car now has 163K on it and has been very reliable. The transmissions used in Rovers and Jags from the 1990's to now are German ZF models, except for the supercharged versions, which is a Mercedes unit, I believe. What Ford brought to the table was greater quality control expertise and of course development money.

Well, here I am again.

Almost exactly 2 years ago I started this thread with a dead V8 looking for wisdom from the hivemind and I'm back again with another dead V8.

I started noticing that I was missing some power...wasn't sure if I was imagining it. A week or so later it threw a cylinder 5 misfire code and the accompanying "Check Engine" light.

The Atlantic-British re-manufactured short block 4.6 V8 with tophat liners is deader than a door nail after 2 years and approximately 20-25kmiles (can't check the odo since the carcass is still at the shop).

I don't know the exact cause of failure but there is oil in cylinder 5, the valve is good. I'm not a mechanic but my mechanic says it's RIP time.

Oil, coolant were well maintained through this engine's life. I never towed any loads or otherwise abused it.

I called Atlantic-British to see if they would be interested in getting the motor shipped back to them to determine cause of failure.....they flat out refused to talk to me about the engine. The 1 year warranty has been expired for one year.

Given this lack of interest by the manufacturer I'm looking at moving on to a new platform. As much as I've loved my Disco it's time to sell the corpse or part it out.

Just a word of warning that these re-manufactured engines are not the 2nd coming.

Interesting. Loss of power and oil in the cylinder would indicate a dropped valve or a broken piston ring.

Was the remanufactured engine a short block or a long block?

Thanks for the update. It would seem the remanufactured block and top hat liners did nothing for the longevity of your engine.
