Safari Cab "Overland Camper" Trailer Build

I was thinking on the lines of a multi-purpose trailer. It would start as an open large tub kit (for carrying longer items). You could then add all of the camper parts and have a camper or remove the center camper panels, add the adapter, and have a hard covered 'big tub'.
That was my thinking behind it. You build it the way you want, but you have the options to make into what you need at the time. ;)

Hey Jeff,

I've followed your various projects for a long time, and I hope you are still monitoring this thread...

I'm starting to think more and more about a barn door for a JK Hard top.
How hard do you think it would be to move the hinges to the side and have the glass open and close with the tailgate?

Thanks and keep up the great projects!

Dan,
Here's a photo showing how I did the barn door upper on the Safari Cab/Safari Overland Camper top. I used "stakes" that bolt to the factory tailgate and to the barn door upper to secure both together into a single unit.

Unfortunately this method of attaching the barn door won't work with the JK factory hardtop liftgate, because the liftgate is all glass - there's nothing to bolt the stakes to, and you can't drill holes in the the tempered glass.

A while back I did a design for a JK Safari Cab, and as part of that design I was planning to do either a barn door or ambulance doors that would also work with the factory hardtop. Below are drawings of both types of doors with the factory hardtop.

The barn door would be a pretty straightforward project and would be done exactly like the LJ/TJ Safari Cab barn door pictured above - it would attach to the factory tailgate.

The ambulance doors would be a bit more difficult because of the hardware involved and the fact that the doors would completely replace the tailgate.

BTW in 2010 (I think) Jeep went and made this project more difficult to do with the factory hardtop - on the hardtops from that year and later the liftgate is wider than the tailgate. Prior to that year they're the same width, which makes the barn door project pretty easy for the earlier JK hardtops.

Jeff,

Thanks for all the info and great pics.
I had not thought about simply attaching the lift gate to the tailgate, doing away with the hinges altogether.

You mention you can't drill into the tempered glass, I wonder if it would be possible to attach something to the glass to epoxy or something similar?
(I think a lot of manual car windows are glued into the mechanism aren't they?)

Hmmm..

jscherb, I believe I purchased a Scrambler you owned. I saw your post on a jeep forum about the Alaska mail truck top.
I was wondering if we could speak offline. The owner I purchased it from only had it a short time. Just wanted to find out more of it's history.
I appreciate it.

Did these tops and specifically the safari trailers ever come into production? I know GR8TOPS builds one. Any more info available? Thanks

Gr8Tops offers the Safari Cab hardtop for both the LJ and the TJ (www.gr8tops.com). Photos of both are below.

The only Safari Overland Camper built so far is the prototype in this thread, it isn't in production, but fiberglass Jeep tub trailer kits like similar to the one the camper in this thread is built on are available at www.dinoot.com.

BTW here's a pop-up camper based on the Jeep-tub trailer...
