I have a 3-9x40 VXII with 2.5" sun shade on top of a Remington Mod 700 in .270 Win. A Bushnell "something" came with the gun and it was okay during the day but low light was a problem and I had to stop hunting well before my buddies. It's sighted for 200 yds. and I can drive tacks all day long. The VXIII was out of my price range. Another nice thing about Leupold scopes are the accessories - sun shades, flip-up covers, etc. that install cleanly (no plasticky, rubberized, universal fit, slip-on stuff). I believe most, if not all, of their products are USA made (don't quote me on that). After an antelope hunt in 2008 we used the rest of our time (and ammo) to help the rancher with his prairie dog problem and were told to shoot any coyote we saw. I was placing headshots on rodents at 300+ yds. and just missed a coyote (on the run) at 700 yds. This was after a week of driving cross-country and bouncing around in the bed of a truck over 20,000 acres. You'll be pleased with your choice!
I also have a Nikon ProStaff on a T/C Encore .50 cal muzzleloader that I have been pleased with it.
I've heard Nightforce are good but have no experience. I'll be building up an AR15 shortly and need to decide what I want. I believe both Leupold and Nightforce are DoD suppliers.
There seems to be a big following for Vortex and I see their marketing everywhere. I have a monocular from them and it's just okay (link). I don't know about their high dollar offerings but most of their stuff is made in Asia (and their packaging/literature doesn't mention it, I get the feeling they don't want you to know that).
