Scrubber3's long overdue build thread

Thanks for all the help Justice. I went through all of the vacuum tubes and actuator for the front engagement slide. All work and look to be in good order. I even pushed the slide in and clamped it there to test it.... Same results. The way it's acting, I'm really thinking its the ring and pinion. I know it's nearly unheard of that one fails, but before I acquired the rig, the front diff was never serviced. Since the front diff was always in motion when driven and my rig had ~170,000 miles on it, (and when I changed the diff oil, I had 2 clumps plop out) I will assume its from that. I can only imagine how hot the metal must have gotten. I'm sure it made it somewhat brittle and since I use my rig for what it was built for and didn't go easy on it whatsoever, it probably had enough.

Been looking for the SR front diff. Preferably out of a 94, but I'll take 94-96 if anyone sees this and decides to offer one up for sale.

To answer the question on how stout the driveline is on one of these, just read a few of the threads in this section. Look at some of the pictures. Find the montero/pajero vids on YouTube. I'll be one to tell you that these trucks are incredibly stout and can handle much abuse before they give. If they even give........ :)

Picked up an SR front diff today. Doing the install next week. I'll keep everyone posted.

After this, my rig will have the rear diff, front diff, and transfer case all out of the SR. So, basically it will be an SR without the hassle of the 3.5 engine. ;)

Did you get the CV axles? Your going to need those as well. Probably will need the front driveshaft as well in order to mate it to the flange on the diff.

Yeah, got the front DS. Also, the right side cv is the same for both the sr and ls. The left is shorter for the sr and since the boot on the left was busted on the sr diff, I'll be getting a new one. I'll also be installing new seals.

I was sure to get that DS as I learned my lesson when I swapped out my ls rear with the sr.

Outback, I'll be sure to keep y'all posted.

Update: I opened the front diff that's on it. It looked fine. :(

Now, I'll switch it out, but I'm still thinking the transmission output shaft sleeve needs replacing. Once I do that, it'll be back to bulletproof. ;)

Sucks that Iron pig here in F'burg was supposed to check it and didn't. Guys decided that finding a seal was worth $100 too.....

Okay, I'm about done fixing this thing. Should be in tip top shape by Tuesday evening. Which is good cause I miss it. Been too long without 4wd and the snow will likely be coming soon.

I miss Virginia's snowy days in Arlington and Falls Church area ^_^. I remember one day in 2003 it reached -27 Celsius (-16.6 F)!

Let's see your rig on snow soon :)

Being a NoVa boy myself, I really miss Virginia a lot, and those snowy days were mighty special for me as a youngster.

Of course, the entire nation's capital shuts down entirely with the slightest snowfall! So, yeah, let's see some action shots of you in the white stuff!

It's disturbing to learn of an unhappy customer; even more so 6 months after the original work was performed. I reviewed our phone records and emails and we have no contact from you about your experiences or the opportunity to address what you perceive to be wrong with your vehicle. Iron Pig Off Road (IPOR) services all manner of domestic and foreign vehicles, not just Toyota, and stands behind their work and products.

You can appreciate as a former certified mechanic and service writer that we perform services based on our customer demands and especially within this offroading community, many of whom perform their own work, and only contract for those tasks beyond their capacity. Naturally, anything obvious that appears unsafe is immediately brought to the attention of the vehicle owner. When conducting a visual inspection we noted your torn and leaking CV boots but did not repair them as that would have incurred additional labor and part charges in excess of your approved scope of work. We also noted that the boots on your newly replaced ball joints were dislodged which will lead to premature joint failure – again, we did not replace the joints or boots because it was outside of your approved SOW. You were advised of this when we worked on your Mitsubishi Montero LJ.

IPOR performed those services you contracted for which included checking the front control arms and rear pinion along with removing and replacing (R&R) the transfer case with the unit you supplied. (Though we noted your torn CV boots no request to remove and inspect the front differential was made.) The used transfer case you supplied was filled with rust and water and required a lot of work to get it to function properly, but by the time the vehicle left it was tested and fully operational. We normally like to overhaul used parts prior to installation (RI&OH) but that was not part of the scope of work you approved.

Also mentioned in your posts was a $100 seal; you were actually charged $9.31. It took a technician 2 hours to procure the part from 2 different parts suppliers to source an output seal, only to learn it did not fit the model transfer case you provided which was not the one normally supplied with your model (LJ) vehicle. After some researching, performing several test fits, and comparative measurements the correct seal was obtained and installed. You were charged for the actual part and the standard book rate of 1 hour of labor.

Our charges were more than fair in comparison with the “book.” When performing estimates IPOR consults the industry standard Mitchell Repair Information Company Mechanical Labor Estimating Guide. The guide suggests 9.4 hours of labor to replace the transfer case and seal and our technician documented 10.5 hours to remove and replace your original LJ component with the used SR transfer case you supplied. You were charged 8 hours per our original estimate plus the hour to replace the seal – less than standard book rate. I am happy to provide you with another copy of the estimate and matching invoice for your records if you’d like to review them again.

We sincerely regret that you feel “ripped off.” Even after 6 months we’d enjoy the opportunity to address your concerns and prefer to deal with our customers directly rather than being wrongfully accused in a public forum without our knowledge. Like you, we too are enthusiasts for this sport and take pride in our work. Please contact us at your convenience.
