shocking!!! another shock question

in the past I have had experiences with KYB as well as Rancho RS5000 (which I actually liked alot), just not on my 1999 F250. My rears are completely shot, and since I am doing the 2" leveling kit might as well put in new shocks all the way around right? I know a lot of people will immediately tell me oh go Bilstein... Go Rancho.... Go Procomp... Go Rough Country...

What i want to know is specifics.. talk me into what you are recommending. Remember I do live in Colorado so some articulation is required, but on hardpacked gravel roads and such that is washboarded i dont want my back end skipping around like my old bronco i had with worn out monroe shocks.

So this is my truck. an 1999 Ford f250 extended cab long bed with 4WD. help me out here. Thanks ahead of time. -Gregg

How much are you wanting to invest? Most white bodies are going to give you the same similar and poor results. If you are really wanting to step up, there are plenty of options but as always, it costs money.

I will say, from EXPERIENCE... Bilstien 5100s on the leveling kit....

They are made for the height of the leveled super duty, and the weight capacity, etc etc.... oh yeah, and lifetime warranty is nice too....

My truck came with the rough country shocks... and while pretty much new... I swapped them out for the 5100s...

I lived in a beach town then, and good controlled ride on and off pavement was a NEED.

I ALMOST spent the money on a set of FOAs or Fox.... The Bilsteins worked great, and were still on the truck when I sold it.... and they had taken some serious beatings.... a powerstroke super duty getting airborn at about 50 is a beating.... and those speeds on hardpacked sand etc....

I have them in my Cummins now....

After that, you are going to end up with something you can rebuild yourself....(my next shock)....

If you liked Rancho 5000's you'll be happy with most anything!

I'm going to jump on the Bilstein wagon. The 5100 Series are the best bang for the buck in shocks out there IMO. Plain 5100's have worked well for me (GMC 2500HD), if you've got a little more change in your pocket the 5150's are better, and the new 5160's are even better, but substantially more expensive.

Chase.....can you tell me the reason you chose the 5150 crossflow reservoir shock over the 5125 or 5100 for your application?

Crap.... shouldnt post after a long day at work.....

Correction....5100s.... on the SD and the ram. I have usd the 5150s just not in a diesel...

Sorry, didnt mean to give wrong info.

Anyway, 5100s are about the best off he rack shock you're gonna get without getting something with a res or rebuildable.

ha ha....i sure understand.

I'll be using Ford shock towers on my K5 so I'm going with 5125's, length to be determined based on what is needed to be done to clear the steering shaft.
as i understand, the 5125's are basically 5100's for custom applications.

as a side note......i had a 2.5" Rancho lift back in the 80's. first thing in the garbage was the RS5000 shocks. i believe i went with Doetsch at the time and they were very good shocks for the money. after a fashion, most of the Rancho kit went in the garbage too........:coffeedrink:

I have 5150s on my Ex. But with the ranchhand on the front, it really needs duals up front. It rocks a little bit too much for me. I would like just a little more damping. I got the 5150s because they were 100ea shipped. I got em from a guy named CaryT on thedieselstop. They are supposedly "valved" for my specific vehicle.

I question that though because I blew out the fronts(bumpstops too short) and bought a new set of 5150s(255)from summit and they feel about the same. But again, he sold em for 100ea shipped which was less than what summit sold em so I went with him the first time. I went with summit the 2nd just to see if there was a difference.

The 5150s don't have the lifetime warranty though. Something to consider.

Im running 5150's on all corners. I bought em valved stiff and they work great on my F-250 with the camper on it. I think they are a great shock for the $$, of course the 5100's are solid as well if you want to save $30 +/- a shock.

Good Luck

very good point about the bump stops........i prefer the progressive style as opposed to solid rubber also.

my 07 F350: started w/ stock RS5000 (FX4), then RS9000, now i changed to the icon shocks when i went w/ their leveling kit.

icon coils are supposed to be "10% softer than stock", but considering there are 8 diff coil options from factory, i never got an answer to which they compared to. (NA to your 99 w/ leafs of course)

anyway, icon shocks (were 5100, then edelbrock made, now icon made) are too stiff for my liking.

i run unloaded and fully loaded (truck camper) so i am going w/ externally adjustable shocks.
tried RS9000 but one broke and the lame adjustment knob always bugged me.
next up: king external adjustable. i hope these work well cuz they are $$

Kings are great shocks, it's what we run on the race Jeep. If you are talking about external bypass shocks the constant clicking of the bypasses working would drive me crazy on a daily driver.

What shocks you get depends on how much money you want to spend, with shocks you definitely get what you pay for.

For the sake of this thread I will assume you want to pay less than $200 per shock. If you want to pay more than $200 per shock that opens up a lot more options, post back and let me know.

For your truck I recommend the Procomp MX-6 adjustable shocks.

I had the Procomp's on a 2000 Ford F150 4x4 that I owned as well as these other shocks (TrailMaster SSV, Rancho RS5000, Rancho R9000XL, Bilstein Heavy Duty) and I liked the Procomp's the best by far. They worked very well on washboard roads and have good ride quality at all adjustment points.

Here is a link.
