Actually, there's a DIY composite camper build that uses those rock climbing hand holds. Thought that was a pretty slick, simple, lightweight, and cheap idea.

I use one of these to access roof rack on top of voyager top. I strap it to my rear swing arm bumper when stowed.

Grass is free, my van is diesel and ass will ONLY cause trouble. So I guess the rides are free.

A side ladder is nice when loading surfboards because you can reach the cross bars without having to be on the roof.

I'm getting quite a kick out of this thread.....
Who care's if anyone else thinks a ladder is stupid, or if anyone else thinks a ladder is the greatest thing ever . If you need a ladder to access the roof , get ya self a ladder. If you think a ladder looks cool , get ya self a ladder. Its your van , do what you want. Don't spend time worrying about what others think

Get outside , get off the beaten path , see cool stuff...........enjoy yourself.

Versatility is one of the best qualities of the vans. It all depends on the use of your van.
Even if it is just to be a poser. I dream of a lot of adventures, but time, family, money....life, do not let me realize those. Time I spend building my van is time I spend on those dreams, even if they will never happened. I am happy using its potential twice a year... your life is better than my vacation? Good for you! In the mean time I’ll get out of my office suit and got into my Indiana Jones outfit.
