Sportsmobile vs. XP Camper -- Why the XP Camper Won For Us

Wow, just found this about Sportsmobile from http://www.badgertrek.com/sportsmobile/ :

"We have, however, become a bit disappointed with some of the quality of the RV conversion which is costing us a lot of time to re-work and would have cost Sportsmobile little to nothing to address during construction. The exterior work for the 4x4 conversion appears sound and reasonably well-thought out, but some of the interior stuff (e.g. plumbing, insulation) is sadly below what I would consider reasonable for the cost, and quite sloppy. For more details you can reference the sub-sections we are placing in the contents to the upper left of this page. (Please realize that we are living in this vehicle year-round, with no house to retreat to for the foreseeable future, so things that concern us may not be of concern to others).
If we were to do this over, we would order the van, with 4x4, penthouse top, and windows, but none of the interior work, and do all of that ourselves. We have had to tear into most of the systems already, and this has used up any time-gains we had obtained by paying Sportsmobile to do the work. For any item they sell and install, the same item purchased seperately at retail seems to be available at about 1/2 the price."

Re: motorcycle rack. Go light. Go simple.

:)

we brought a KTM690 down to Panama using a cheapo $200 hitch trailer. if it brakes, anyway can fix it/reinforce it.

Well, as long as we're offering our opinions here, and like fannies, we all have one... What about the problem that XP campers are plain frigging butt-ugly?

There's nothing sexier (and as useful) than a FWC (type) mounted on a capable 4WD. (IMHO)

There. I said it.

As a FWC owner I have to ask why you think they are ugly? I find them to be an ultimate desire. Just goes to show you everyone has different tastes.

Um, tnt you need to re-read that. I called XP campers ugly (especially the V2,) and FWC sexy..

For instance, I might just love this more than Bacon. Might, I say:

Not to stray off topic, but IMHO the "look" of the XP inside is light years ahead of the FWC. Yes, the XP costs a LOT more, but FWC needs to step it up as they're still stuck in the late 80's/early 90's with their interiors. :( A few simple changes in aesthetics would go a LONG way with their campers.

When was the last time you looked inside an FWC?

Agree with you, the XP's are much more modern feeling and are. As for looks, I dunno it's a camper, form follows function. XP is doing what the Euro's and Aussies
have been doing for years, the FWC feels very out-dated, and a bit cheap. As they say, you get what you pay for. Most of the American made campers and RV's are
just so cheap feeling and are really, feel years behind the what the rest of the World has been doing.

That said, I like the EarthCruiser over both, but I am an old VW Kombi guy...I like loafs of bread apparently.
Wonder if Marc would do an XP for the foward control chassis?

I prefer the form, function, and look of the XP over the FWC. I like the clean sailboat interior, but I come from that background. The FWC interior is wallpaper and paperbacked veneer, but very easy to change. Yes it's comparing apples to oranges but I can do a lifetime of camping on the money I saved by choosing the FWC over the XP. An additional benefit are all those trails that I can travel that a full size (rather plus size rig) cannot.
Cheers

Hi John,
About a month ago on their site.
The Dovetail Greystone is nice and upscale fabric IMHO, the rest and interior finishes are very dated.
If FWC has severely updated them, then their website should reflect this in pics.
