Stepping down wire gauge sizes for aux power

ok, so since I'm restricted (or limited) to using 12awg on the main wire from the batt to the tent because of the bulkhead plug I should be ok using a 20amp inline fuse & relay. Step down the wire to 18awg to mate with wiring on the light and plug and use either 5amp or 10 amp inline fuse for each.

if the wire is 12awg and inline fuse between the batt and relay is 20amp, does it matter if that relay is 40 or 50 amp rated?

sorry for all the questions, I haven't done much wiring before and this is all like math to me... makes the brain hurt! ;)

No, it does not. You will simply be under-utilizing the relay. Not a problem.
