Thanks guys!

looks cool. how much does that weigh?

It all 16 gauge, maybe 5-6 pounds? Its not heavy, but should be strong enough to keep the cylinder in place once it gets bolted down. The cylinder is pretty heavy when full, and not much lighter when empty.

Carrier Hinge Choice

James,
I love your rear winch bumper! What carrier hinge design are you going to use, single shear spindle or double shear bracket? Also, where are you going to mount it, on the bumper face or on top of the bumper? Thank you.

Excellent fab skills! If you need a set of dimple dies, I have a 1.5" and 2" 35 degree flare. I found the designs on-line in a forum, and they are easy enough to turn down on a lathe. PM for info.

Thanks for the compliments, I will be using the Comp 4x4 hinge, with the sleeve. Single shear at this point, but I may come up with something. The sleeve really takes out the issues of the heat screwing up the temper on te stub shaft. I am installing one on a friends bumper right now, and it looks like the ticket.

It will be mounted through the top of the bumper, likely on the right side.

I will send a PM on the dies, my lathe is small, but I may be able to pull it off. Thanks!!

That reminds me... I never updated this thread with the front bumper/winch modification.

Since I moved the smittybilt to the rear bumper, I had to modify the front bumper on the front to accept my Warn 8274 winch. Was pretty straightforward. This winch is a BEAST! It was a little scary just spooling in the new line... its quick!

Spent a couple more hours today getting the strap and mounting tabs welded on. I will paint it and mount it tomorrow. I am pretty pleased with it. It aint perfect, but its a damn site better than a ratchet strap to the tool box.

Welded on the rear mounts.

Next up was to make a hinge/pin for the strap. Just some stuff I had in the nut/bolt bin around.

Locking nut gets welded into here.

Heres what it looks like with the bottle sitting in it.

Made the strap out of some 16 gauge as well. Welded one end to the hinge pivot, bent a 90 on the other end. A few speed holes for style points. Made the t-bar out of some 8mm allthread I had. Turned it down in the lathe, welded on a collar, welded on the "T" and viola.

Its finished at this point. might have missed a photo or two, but you get the gist. I moved it a little further forward in the jeep, just because, but it still fits ok. Its not bolted down, just sitting there.

Thats awesome! I love it! I wish I had the fab skills (and tools :snorkel: ) to make stuff like that.

Indeed, very fine work Stump. Your high school shop teacher would be very proud.

Haha... God I hope not. He got fired/resigned and later arrested for getting a little too touchy/feely with some 'boys' in his classes.

Howevere, my dad would be proud, he is pretty much who taught me most of this stuff. And just learning by doing it (read: messing up, then having to 'fix' it)

Thanks guys!

Geez if it wasn't for the age difference I think your shop teacher and my Biology teacher belonged to the same club.....Ahh fond memories....staying away from the 'strange hands on teacher'
Isn't it nice to have learned stuff from your dad.....I still remember him telling me to get the vise-grips by the toolbox and no matter what I couldn't find them.....finally he would get up from under the Plymouth and get them right where he said they were.....geeeez! Done the same thing with my son but was a little more patient.

Yeah man, my Pops is my hero for sure. Taught me everything I know and then some. (not to take anything from my Mom..., we are talking 'man' stuff here). He has owned a metal fabshop/hotrod shop for a LONG time now, Machine shop, paint and body, welding etc, they do it all except interior work. He is an old school hotrod builder, never owned a computer, never owned a cell phone. He can hang with the best of them though, and is well respected in his little niche. I feel very lucky to have had such a 'normal' awesome childhood with awesome parents.

My Wife is 15 weeks pregnant with our first (both in our early 30's), and I have a lot to live up to when compared to my dad. Little nervous to say the least.
