Surf n Turf 11.06

Hey everyone,

I got home about midnight last night from the wild and beautiful beaches of California that had about a zillion Landcruisers partying for 3 days!! Well, the people in the Landcruisers anyway~~ Still feeling a bit muddle-headed from days of very little sleep and hours of talking with old friends and meeting tons of other enthusiasts and dogs everywhere! Whew!

Somehow I never really got the camera out, too busy talking and visiting. There will be tons of photos around the forums though. The FJ Cruiser Trail Team was there, filming, and we saw some FJ's jusmping in the dunes catching air and my favorite was one morning they filmed 2 FJ's racing down the beach, full speed, right at the water line, salt spray everywhere---so romantic :Wow1: Who gets to clean that baby!!

Anyway, another great event with lots of cool cruiser people and Jim and Katherine Brantley pulled off another fun California beach party.

Now, I have to go get sand out of Everything :littlefriend:

Kristina!

I was sooooo tempted to get over there, but the engine mount and fuel pump are still pending.

Maybe next year...

I had a chance to take a ride in the FZJ45 - owned by Gary Waggoner from Texas - Butch Baker offered me a ride in the dunes - the vehicle sits on 6" slee springs and has 40" tires - it is so well built and drives like a dream!

that was a fun ride surfing on the dunes!

I finally made it to Surf N Turf for the first time. I thought I'd post my reactions...for what they're worth to all that might be considering going in the future.

GENERAL: This is basically a laidback (hey, it's CA!) weekend beach party:beer: ...nothin' wrong with that!...where folks can enjoy the beach(maybe!), booze, bonfire, shoptalk on their rigs, hang with their friends and meet other folk.:suning: But it's pretty much the opposite of ExPo Rally with its emphasis on training, technical skills and competition, and day and a half trail run.

PROS:
--ALOT of eye candy :truck: ...pretty much every rig configuration and means of enjoying the outdoors you can hope to see in one spot at one time...especially Toyotas, Landcruisers especially!
--Great location on the dunes and next to the Pacific...one of the few (if not only) places left where you can drive right out onto the beach (however, more on that below!)
--Good folk...making new friends/acquaintances...I was quite surprised at the amount of conversation and interaction with new folk because of the pics of my rig on BajaTaco's website (thanks again Chris!) as well as postings on ExPo. I was the only Flippac there...and it continues to suprise me how relatively little known the Flippac is and people's interest. Those Flippac folk just don't advertise!
--Enjoying the dunes and getting experience driving in that environment...took four runs at one big steep dune before making it to the top...wanted to experiment with feeling how much power/momentum was necessary...other than just flooring it! (reversing/sliding back down was "interesting") :)

CONS:
--NOISE POLLUTION! This is BIG one for me...the nearly constant, obnoxious sound of quads! They are all over the dunes. I had no idea how loud they are and irritating they become after hearing them nearly 18 hours a day! For me, it ruins the beautiful and peaceful sound of the surf. If you can't relate, think of it this way - you're in a beautiful ocean setting and you have to listen to the whine and roar of chain saws in close proximity 18 hours a day. Too bad they don't exclude quads every other weekend.
--There are no formal offroad technical aspects to this weekend...I wouldn't mind a little of that.

BOTTOM LINE: I'm glad I went...it would be difficult to go again...just can't stand the thought of the sound of those obnoxious quads all weekend. Obviously others can tune that out or choose to put up with it.

Agreed about the quads. Never really dealt with that kind of noise before and if you go there, be prepared. Pismo Jim did mention that they are major protecors of "dune rights" so, I guess they are a necessary evil.

On to better things...I saw your rig there and meant to come check it out, very nice. I love that tent. Got room?

Over all, we had a great time. Good people, some beers, and my buddy came down on Saturday with a piggy that he harvested near Paso. We did a Hawaiian style deep pit for a delicious Sunday brunch. Here is to Surf n' Turf...:friday:

I missed meeting you there - but I did hear about the pig - too bad we had to blaze out early on Sunday...

Vince - I was really glad and surprised when I saw you and Heather by the fire talking with Desertgirl - it was a cross culture event with many new and old friends to visit with - I talked so much my voice got sore :)

Sounds like you had a fun ride up to and good time up at Pozo Saloon sorry we missed your performance !

I did get to shake your hand by the fire one night. Very brief.

Perhaps we can chat more the next time and you can have some pig with us!

yes indeed - it is tough when you know people in text form and avatar names - I usually have a fairly good memory for faces and names when I shake a hand - I wasn't even drinking...much
