I'm sure they could function as receivers only. Narrowband reception seems to lower the audio level by about half in my experience. As long as there is enough volume to hear Ok, you'd be fine. I was thinking that one could be set up as an internet gateway. It could act as an APRS receiver. I have been a little too busy to take on another project like that though.What about taking the mics off and just using them as scanners? The NB/WB thing wouldn't matter much until there were interstitial freqs in use.
Next year I will have a repeater that is replaced. That will go to a local club. I hope we can put it into service very close to its current location as the valley coverage is very good. The Alvord a Steens country would benefit from its coverage.
