Switcheroo - 1 Bored Clerk's 2013 Tacoma Build

Some sort of lost...
What's the status of the third member? What gears were in it? Mine were nitro and I haven't heard a peep of gear whine.

Fortunately the rear is very quick and easy compared to the front!

The bumper and winch look good!

I really want a full aluminum bumper but the "stealthness" of that bumper is definitely cool.

Thanks. I like the stock look of things. I may still redo this as part of the camper build but this bumper will work just fine until I can get back around to it.

I've been out of the country for a week but I haven't heard anything from ECGS, nor did I expect to. I was told to call chase if I hadn't heard from him in a couple of weeks. I'll call first of the week after this coming.

The existing 3rd is still whining away. It seems to drive fine but it's obviously not correct.

He told what gears were used and which gears he likes but I can't remember which is which. If you just received your gears around the same time I did, I think it's almost guaranteed they are the same. ECGS said they've used my same gears on maybe a dozen other tacomas with no complaints. So, mine are oddballs.

I'm still waiting on a bunch of rear suspension goodies from all-pro. Hopefully everything shows up around the same time and I can do it all at once!

The truck will go in for it's exhaust re-route on Wednesday of next week! Something very similar to this
Exhaust Re-Route.jpg

I can't wait! The exhaust crossover drop in my Relentless skidplate is the most banged up part of all of my skids...plus, the exhaust would rattle on the skid no matter how much I adjusted it (after I banged it up a bit at Moab). I'll cut the drop off and weld a flat plate in its place. It'll be nice to have a smooth belly.

Interested to see how this goes. I haven't had great experiences with exhaust shops around here so I'll be curious to see who you use.

Yeah, I'm a little nervous about it but we'll see how it goes. Staying positive!!

I'm going to Punk's in Vancouver.

New rear diff is on its way! Nitro gears back in stock. It'll be nice to eliminate the whining from the rear end...it's really annoying after 4 hours in the truck!

My rear suspension is due to ship...or has shipped (??) from all-pro too. I'll do a write up of all the changes I made and what I think of them once they're all done.

Glad to hear! My third had nitro gears, guess it was just bad timing. Be glad it isn't the front that you're swapping out again.

Right!? I would have been 'upset' to have to swap the front again. I'll have the rear end up in the air soon for the rear suspension upgrade anyway so it will only add about 30 minutes to that process.

Well, good news and bad news on the exhaust re-route front.

Good news: Punks in Vancouver, WA is awesome! The exhaust looks great and meets every dimensional spec I gave them.

Bad news: I didn't even think to ask what kind of collector they were going to use. The collector they used splits the flow right down the middle which means that you need to offset a pipe somewhere. They offset the pipe coming from the cat on the passenger side instead of offsetting the pipe going into the factory muffler. I would have done the same thing! However, that offsets the pipe coming out of the passenger side cat right up against the wall of my relentless transfer case skid. It will rattle like a mutha'! Didn't even think about that when giving the shop my specs but noticed it would likely be a problem as soon as I looked under the truck. I sent an email to Kasey (guy who did my exhaust) within diagrams of what the problem is and what I'd like him to do for me to fix it. It'll cost more money but it'll be a TON easier than modding the skid plate to work. Trust me.

With tax, this crossover work cost me $184. I feel really good about that. My guess is that I'll be paying another $184 to have it redone. Boo-hoo...live and learn.

All of you considering a similar mod, let this be a warning to you. Learn from my mistakes!

So this collector required them to push the passenger side further out to the passenger side, right? The relentless skid must angle up to the frame there?

I'm still torn on what to do. But for $200 or less I may visit punks and have them reroute mine. I really want a skid plate before my trip but I can't decide if I want to leave the exhaust, or just reroute and leave it (for now). I don't want to spend money for both right now as it's gas money at this point. Problem is I probably need to know how a skid plate will fit before re-routing....

Did you retain the rear cats as well?

Yeah, I kept the cats. I don't care about whatever performance gain I might get so I figured it wasn't worth messing with.

The relentless skids side wall is right at that point. The arm that reaches to the frame attaches to that wall. Too much to mess with. Punks quote me $75 to fix my new exhaust. August 4th is the date.

If you are going to get a transfer case skid, get your exhaust re routed. Even if you wait to get the skid, re-routing your exhaust has clearance benefits. Once mine is done and I have the skid modded and put back on, we should meet up and I'll be happy to go over the fine details of how to have it done.

If you need to know more about this sooner than aug 4th, pm me and we can set up a meetup and I can show you what needs to happen. You could get yours done how I plan to get mine redone. Also, the next available appointment at punks as of today is Friday July 31
