Tall Camper

AT 6'2" in height, I am concerned that a Four Wheel Camper will have enough space to sleep and stretch, with pillow and curled toes. What are owners opinions?

The FWC bunk is a east-west "queen". That was one of many reasons I went with a custom Phoenix. I'm 6'1" and having the tent at my arms and feet was a concern of mine. I was imagining moving in my sleep and punching a hole through the side. I had Phoenix build a king, north south for me and the wife. Fits me well. Although my toes will hang over the edge from time to time if I'm stretching my arms out when I sleep.

If your sleeping solo, I'd think you could get away with sleeping diagonally in the FWC.

I'm 6' and sleep 'north south' in a FWC Eagle bunk with no problems and it's still wide enough for my wife and I with room to spare. My Eagle is one of the narrowest models in the FWC line, there are others that are wider and I guess 'east west' or 'north south' would work with them.

I'm 6'9" and I will be sleeping diagonally on the over cab bunk, and with me dog somewhere in the Hawk. I wanted FWC to switch the sink and stove on the counter so the bunk could slide out to a king but they refused wanting to sell me the flush mounted sink and stove for an additional $600. I said no, I cannot afford that. They are lengthening the vinyl and thermal pack to an inside height of 6'9" to which I am very happy. Compromises.

I don't own a FWC but I built a pop up with about the same dimensions as a Hawk and I have been in a FWC several yrs ago at a outdoorsman's show. Check it yourself, of course, but you might find it cramped. You don't say if you have a compact or a full size truck but either way you might want to check the Northstar campers, they have north/south larger beds, much higher standing height, up to 6'8" depending on the model and they say they can be used unsupported off the truck (FWC cannot). They come pretty well equipped and seem like a great value compared to FWC or Phoenix. I don't think that I have read of any problems with quality or build regarding Northstar. Personally I have considered buying a 850sc but it is really too nice for the way I camp, maybe I will consider one when I retire and do longer trips (someday).

Don't know your vehicle, so don't know the camper model you would get. Fullsize truck models, Hawk and Grandby, have a bed size of 79" by 64" when pulled out, 79" by about 48" (I think) without the pullout. I am about 5' 11" and sleep fine, but suspect some minor contact with the sidewall fabric if I were 3" taller and stretched out with pointy toes. I doubt any damage would occur, but wet bedding from condensation would be my concern.

We have a 2014 Grandby with the extended bed. My wife and I sleep North/South. She is 5'-2" and I'm 5'-9" My feet hang over a little. Plenty of width. I don't have any issues with my feet hanging off the end.

I'm 6'3" with a 2012 Hawk and I sleep/fit just fine east to west.
Note the Hawk is the full size truck model.

Yep. My TC800 has 6'7" of interior height and I'm 6'4". The camper's going on 15 yrs old now with a water pump and C02 monitor, being the only problems. We have a 56" x 80" east west- bed. I sleep fine in it.

I pretty much have the same question so I bumped this older thread. I'm 6'4" and will be traveling with my wife so sleeping diagonal isn't an option and my feet barely reach the end of an 80" bed so an east west might not work.
Finding a light weight truck camper with an 80" north south bed, 80 inches interior height and good build quality is like looking for a unicorn.
I noticed some pop ups like the Hallmark Ute have a 75 inch north south bed but there is no lip at the foot end. It seems like an 80 inch mattress could fit and hang over the edge a few inches. Has anyone tried it or can someone speak to the practicality?

Obviously I'm open to other suggestions but I also need a shower and toilet to keep the wife happy. I am also considering the Northern Lite 8-11 and Scout Kenai.

Thanks!

Hey, can relate as it's pretty much the same for me, used to my feet/head being pretty much at the outer ends of the mattress, pillow potentially getting kinda uncomfortably squished up between my head and a wall or bed end if there is one at the head end (or repeatedly falling if there is none!), or feet simply touching it at the other end. Not ideal, but have come to live with it.

As for your situation, someone above mentioned this:

Don't know your vehicle, so don't know the camper model you would get. Fullsize truck models, Hawk and Grandby, have a bed size of 79" by 64" when pulled out, 79" by about 48" (I think) without the pullout. I'm not sure about your requirements but that sounds like it might actually work even east-west right? Would assume it also has enough standing height. I must say I'm not familiar with the typical US camper builds so can't otherwise recommend or comment on specific brands/models. As per your other question, think it depends on the mattress; if you have a somewhat thicker/firm mattress that holds it shape pretty well a few inches overhang shouldn't be an issue (speaking from experience), especially at the feet-end where not much weight rests on the mattress, can't say/imagine the same for a typical soft/more flexible foam mattress though.

I'm also in the planning process and would prefer to sleep east-west myself. Like the person I quoted, my main concern is with wet bedding from condensation/direct contact with wet walls, or the 'canvas' annoyingly flapping around on my head in heavy winds as with a tent, or excessive noise from being right next to the wall. If anyone has related experiences I'd like to hear about them!

I agree. I don't think a few inches of overhang should effect the mattress holding shape. I'm also concerned with obstructions that might not be visible in the photographs I have seen or that the overhang might interfere with sitting at the dinette or make it difficult to climb into the bed.
