This is the control pad for "The Heat":

_MG_5313.jpg

It would be interesting to know which kind of control system Anderson Mobile Estates uses. The two main choices seems to be Crestron and Savant -- see http://www.crestron.com/markets/yachts_jets_motor_coaches_transportation_automation/ , http://www.crestron.com/products/controllers/ , http://www.crestron.com/resources/p...ources/catalogs_and_brochures/online_catalog/ , and http://www.crestron.com/resources/high-res_photos_and_logos/ ; and https://www.savant.com , https://www.savant.com/products , https://www.savant.com/plus , https://www.savant.com/truecontrol , https://savantsystems.force.com/Customers , https://www.savant.com/smart-vs-pro , and https://www.savant.com/media-kit .

Marathon Coaches, Liberty Coaches , and Becker Jet Vans use Crestron -- http://www.marathoncoach.com/the-custom-advantage--custom-build , http://www.marathoncoach.com/--Crestron_Robust_High_Technology_for_Your_Marathon_Coach , http://www.crestron.com/downloads/pdf/inside_stories/245/Marathon_Motor_Coach.pdf , http://www.marathoncoach.com/--TechLink_The_Industrys_Most_Advanced_Electrical_System , http://www.marathoncoach.com/read-about-us--media , http://www.marathoncoach.com/view-photos-of-motorcoaches--gallery , and http://www.fmcmagazine.com/back-issues/2009/october-71747/109-marathon-coach-dreams-on-wheels.html ; see http://www.prevost-stuff.com/crestron_electronics_awards_2008LIBERTY.htm , http://www.libertycoach.com/our-coaches , http://www.affluentmagazine.com/articles/article/290 , and http://www.rvbusiness.com/2014/03/liberty-coach-launches-remote-monitoring-link/ ; http://www.crestron.com/downloads/pdf/inside_stories/74/Becker_JetVan.pdf , http://www.beckerautodesign.com/pdf/jetvan-brochure.pdf , http://www.beckerautodesign.com , http://www.beckerautodesign.com/jetvan/ , and http://www.beckerautodesign.com/jetvan/gallery.html :

While Millennium Coaches use Savant -- see http://www.millenniumluxurycoaches.com , http://www.millenniumluxurycoaches.com/about/ , http://www.millenniumluxurycoaches.com/category/news/ , http://www.millenniumluxurycoaches.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/FMCAPDF.pdf , http://www.fmcmagazine.com/back-issues/2014/june/3520-millennium-luxury-coaches.html , and http://motorhome.prevostcar.com/sophisticated-elegant-millenium-luxury-coaches :

Because I've used Macs all my life, and I am a big "Apple" fan, my own strong inclination would be in the direction of Savant -- see http://www.avriviera.com/Default.asp?p=5&L=1 , http://www.rgbcomms.co.uk/manufacturers/manufacturer_detail.asp?manufacturer=70 , and https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/savant-truecontrol-ii/id414950788?mt=8 . The idea of controlling one's expedition motorhome from one's iPad or iPhone is very attractive. But Savant appears to be the younger company (see https://www.savant.com/about ). And Crestron is said to have the widest possible selection of controllers, add-on hardware, and all the bug-free software needed to make everything work together seamlessly.

There is a really good comparative article at http://www.casaplex.com/crestron-vs-savant/ .

3. Formula 1 Trailers

************************************************

In the world of Formula 1, the “support trailers” owned by Ferrari, Bernie Ecclestone, and others, have long featured fully extensible double-height interiors – see http://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/ferrari-f1-team-motorhome-used-from-2003-to-2013-for-sale/ and http://www.motorsportauctions.com/c...s/33568/Ferrari-F1-Race-Trailer-for-sale.html , http://www.motorsport.com/all/photo...auler-3/?&i=1&id=1791652&ampsz=8&a=459073&s=2 :

Just in case you were wondering, yes, this format is now fairly standard for Formula 1 "motorhomes" in general (if "motorhome" is the right word....:sombrero: ). Instead of posting another hundred images to prove my point, I'll just post these videos instead, one serious, and other satirical:

4. Exhibition and Showroom Trailers

************************************************

So too, quite a few “exhibition”, “showroom”, and “concert” or "mobile stage" trailers have full-height pop-ups:

It seems that in this particular market niche, one of the leading suppliers is “Craftsmen Industries” – see http://craftsmenind.com/get-inspired/ , http://craftsmenind.com/get-inspired/gallery/ , http://craftsmenind.com/get-inspired/case-studies/ , http://craftsmenind.com/experiential-b2b/vehicle-customization/ , http://craftsmenind.com/get-inspired/gallery/vehicle-customization/ , http://craftsmenind.com/experiential-b2b/demonstration-vehicles-b2b/ , http://craftsmenind.com/get-inspired/gallery/demonstration-vehicles/ , http://craftsmenind.com/experiential-b2b/training-vehicles-b2b/ , http://craftsmenind.com/get-inspired/gallery/training-vehicles/ , http://craftsmenind.com/get-inspired/gallery/training/ , http://craftsmenind.com/industrial/vehicles/ , http://craftsmenind.com/industrial/containers/ , http://craftsmenind.com/industrial/vehicles/military-law-enforcement/ , http://craftsmenind.com/get-inspired/gallery/military-law-enforcement/ , http://craftsmenind.com/industrial/vehicles/command-center/ , http://craftsmenind.com/get-inspired/gallery/command-centers/ , http://craftsmenind.com/industrial/containers/kitchens/ , http://craftsmenind.com/get-inspired/gallery/kitchens-containers/ , http://craftsmenind.com/get-inspired/gallery/kitchens-vehicle/ , http://craftsmenind.com/industrial/containers/offices/ , http://craftsmenind.com/get-inspired/gallery/offices/ , http://craftsmenind.com/industrial/containers/hazmat/ , http://craftsmenind.com/experiential-b2b/exhibits/ , http://craftsmenind.com/get-inspired/gallery/exhibits/ , http://craftsmenind.com/get-inspired/gallery/event-site-assets/ , http://craftsmenind.com/graphics/3d-elements/ , http://craftsmenind.com/get-inspired/gallery/3d-elements/ , http://craftsmenind.com/graphics/vehicle-graphics/ , http://craftsmenind.com/get-inspired/gallery/vehicle-graphics/ , http://craftsmenind.com/craftsmen/facility/ , and https://www.youtube.com/user/Craftsmenindtv .

Craftsmen Industries did the double-height Olympus trailer whose set-up video I posted above right.

Here are some more videos about Craftsman Industries specifically:

And some images of Craftsmen Industries trailers:

Now granted, most mega-sized "marketing", "showroom", and "exhibition" trailers are not double-story, but rather, single-story, with full-length double slide-outs:

And of course, many mobile command centers are single-story trailers, with double slide-outs:

5. The TerraLiner's Pop-Up

************************************************

In short, what I am imagining is a full-standing-height Pop-Up, but for a vehicle much, much smaller (!!!!) than any of those illustrated above: a 10 m motorhome.

Yes, many of the vehicles depicted above are kind of nuts. For instance, Simon Cowell's re-vamped interior of Will Smith's trailer has a mobile doctor's office, for actors prone to hypochondria – see http://videos.hgtv.com/video/simon-cowell's-motor-home-0199720 . But still, I wanted to post all of this information to make it clear just how advanced “hydraulic expansion” has become, in a variety of transportation applications. If you don't know about any of this (Anderson Mobile Estates, Craftsmen Industries, Forumula 1 Motorhomes, etc.), then the TerraLiner's full-height, full-length pop-up will seem “over the top”. Whereas if you do know all of the above, the TerraLiner's pop-up will no longer seem all that unusual, new, or technologically innovative.

The following video gives a better idea of what I have in mind:

Untitled-1b.jpg Untitled-1c.jpg

When looking at this video and these images. eliminate most of the windows down below; add a few more up top; eliminate the slide-out; and imagine Norpac Thinsulate R2 extreme weather fabric connecting the front of the pop-up to the cab, as per the XP camper (see next post). But on a much, much larger scale than the XP.

For detailed discussion at great length of the kind of Pop-Up I have in mind, see posts #150 to #161, at http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...pedition-RV-w-Rigid-Torsion-Free-Frame/page15 , http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...pedition-RV-w-Rigid-Torsion-Free-Frame/page16 , and http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...pedition-RV-w-Rigid-Torsion-Free-Frame/page17 .

In particular, see the extended discussion of the XP camper very early in the thread: post #64 on page 7, at http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...xpedition-RV-w-Rigid-Torsion-Free-Frame/page7 , and post #!51 at http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...pedition-RV-w-Rigid-Torsion-Free-Frame/page16 :

xpsunset.jpg xp-camper-down.jpg xp-camper-up.jpg
newext7.jpg newext5.jpg newext1.jpg

For further information about the XP camper, see http://xpcamper.com . And here are a few videos:

As I stated at the very beginning of the thread, I have been imagining a full-length pop-up that "solves" the problem of closing the front of the pop-up, by using fabric in the same manner as the XP camper.

The hard sides of the pop-up cannot descend down at the front of the vehicle, because they would then cover the front windshield and cab side windows. In the simulation video just posted above they go for a "mechanical" solution to this problem, of front-of-pop-up exposure. But I see no reason why a softer, "fabric" solution as per the XP camper should not in principle be possible. Especially now that specialized insulating fabrics like Norpac Thinsulate R2 exist -- see http://www.norpacr2.com/index.html , http://www.norpacr2.com/about.html , http://www.norpacr2.com/prod_test_results.html , http://www.norpacr2.com/thinsulate.html , http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Thinsulate_Insulation/Homepage/AboutUs/WhatIsThinsulate/ , http://www.norpacr2.com/pd.html , http://www.norpacr2.com/locs.html , and http://www.norpacr2.com/downloads/NorpacR2PressRelease.pdf .

From the inside of the Pop-UP, the Norpac Thinsulate R2, if composed of a few "quilted" layers, might look something like this:

20071226-151244-TreeHugger-lib-hatchtocabin.jpg 1.jpg uni1.jpg

The white fabric, that is; not the other stuff in these images.....

Again, thjakits, you could say that I am engaged in an illegitimate exercise in miscegenation. But in transportation design, miscegenation is another word for innovation and originality. It is precisely “crossover” vehicles of various types that tend to capture the imaginations of the public, and change the market dynamics of the transportation industry widely conceived. Some forms of miscegenation perhaps go too far, like flying cars, or amphibious buses, and at best have only niche-market/novelty value. But it's difficult to gauge in advance exactly where the “line” should be.

Prior to seeing the Paradise Motorhomes expedition vehicle with double full-length slide-outs and drop-down deck, most would probably have imagined such a vehicle impossible, or impractical, or too expensive, or all three. But now that it has been done, it's your favorite expedition motorhome thus far. So who knows what else might be possible.

Also, rest assured that a large market for multi-million dollar motorhomes does in fact exist. Newell alone constructs more than 30 motorhomes a year, all of them over a million USD, but all of them only “America-capable” vehicles. For other market leaders in this category, again see http://www.cbsnews.com/media/7-incredible-multimillion-dollar-motorhomes .

Maybe something equivalent, able to traverse the entire planet, might find a ready market, too; maybe not. But if one's imaginative horizon is limited merely to the world of American-made, truck-camper based motorhomes like Earthroamer, then clearly, anything I illustrate or propose will seem slightly insane or ridiculous. I will insist that my proposals should be classified as innovative but realistic, whereas more conservative types will insist that my proposals are mere Art School fantasies.

But I can already promise you this: my proposal will not be an OEX-B…..:sombrero:

6. Re-Cap and Summary

************************************************

To recap and summarize my line of thinking, visually......

I want a bedroom up above, on a second level, just like Unicat or Armadillo. A bedroom that looks something like this:
